Just bought my first IH to farm with (also have my grandfathers Super W-6). Its a 826 german dsl, gear drive wide front. Has 1613 actual hours, one owner off a 80 acre farm. Looks like new. What if any advice does anyone have about these. I have been around a 706 german and know they require a block heater but didn't know if there was anything else to look out for.

Awesome find. If you would please, e-mail me a picture or post it here on the site. We have an 826 with around 7000 hours. Original rainbow tach broke around 5500 hours a few years ago, ran it like that for a while, then put a new replacement black one in, didn't truly install it for a couple more years. I love, absolutly love the 826 and other tractors with the German diesel. I just think they're cool. Yeah, cold blooded SOB's, but because of it we winterize our 826 (here in Wisconsin), park it in the back of the shed, and use one of four other tractors (two 856's, a 3588 and 3788 2+2). One 856 has a water/block heater, so plug it in for a few hours and it takes off like summer. The other 856 was bought new on our farm (one owner tractor), still has IH muffler, 13,000 hours, best of our tractors; will start if not by itself a tiny squirt of either. If the temps are in the teens one or two squirts of either will get it rumbling. Twenties takes one squirt. Thirties...if the night was cold maybe a squirt. I'd like to farm when I'm older and on my own, and will only use IH's if I manage a big farm, but if I have a smaller farm I'd like my Super M, an 826, and an 856. That's all I need in life. Anyway, after telling you my life's story, our 826 has been an extremely reliable tractor, even though it was bought used with around 2,000 hours. With as little hours as your tractor has, there should be very few problems. Number one thing I've noticed with every tractor I've been raised with (7-12 tractors) was it's tendency to give you grief and it's relation to its last owner. If the machine was even mildly cared for, it will treat you great. If it was worked and only maintained to keep it running, then things tend to tire easily. Our 856 with 13,000 hours is 300 times better than our auction bought 856 with 9,000 hours. Hey, have fun with the 826.

You are lucky. I doubt that there are more than a handful of 30 year old tractors with such low hours. That 358 in your 826 probably isn't even broke in yet! You have many trouble-free years to look forward to. We have three tractors with the 358 German, a 826 gear with 7900 hours, turned up and turbocharged; a 786 with 7500 hours; and a 3088 with 1800 hours. The 826 and 786 still run just as good as the 3088. We just got the 826 back in June, so I don't know how it will do in the winter yet. 786 and 3088 have higher compression, and start ten times better than the older German diesels. The one area I would consider to be a problem on the 826 is the charging system. It has a Delco DN externally regulated alternator. This system wasn't used for very long, and no one knows much about it. Ours had some charging system trouble. I had the alternator tested by the Case-IH dealership, tried three different regulators, and had the Case-IH dealership out to look at it twice. Finally, they figured out that there is a diode in this alternator that can go bad, and still allow the alternator to charge. It just wouldn't allow the regulator to take control of field current. This made the alternator look good when it was bench tested. To make things worse, the dealership also figured out that their whole last shipment of those darn external regulators were junk right from the factory. If you ever have any electrical problems, re-wire the tractor and switch to a Delco SI internally regulated alternator. It will save you headaches. Other than that, they are very exellent tractors, one of the finest IH's built. If you have any other questions, just ask.
