I have a 2-bottom I-H plow (14") and was wondering how to identify the model number. The only numbers I can find stamped on the plow are "P012572" and "PO17184" on the top of the rear and front main beams. I would appreciate any information on how to identify the model number and any information on what years this plow was made. Thank you.

Dan

Congratulations-- your the proud owner of a No. 8 Little Genius. If you do a search through the archives you should be able to find the years made. Sometime in the late '20s or early '30s all the way till sometime in the '50s, I think.

Mike,

Thanks for that information. I got the plow from my dad in 1980 and he had had it for a long time before that but he didn't buy it new. Thanks again.

FM: Not quite so fast, first we must determine type of tail wheel. If tail wheel has a linkage from the front wheel rockshsft to rear wheel activating the rear wheel to lift the back of plow then you have a little genius, but not necessarily a number 8. There were other two bottom little genius plows, although number 8 is most likely.

If there is a rigid tail wheel or no tail wheel than plow is a little wonder, number 1.

Little Wonder plows were built from 1927 to 1942, whilr Little Genius plows were built from 1928 to 1960.

Mr. MacKay,

The plow does have a linkage from the front wheel rockshaft to the rear wheel so I guess that makes it a little genius. Is there any other way to determine if it is indeed a number 8? Thank you very much for your very valuable information.

Dan: Please with the Mr. MacKay stuff, I cant hack that one, Hugh is just fine.

The Little Genius plows were in later years not refered to as Little Genius plows but rather only the Number 8 tractor plow. I suspect this took place after the Little Wonder plow was dropped in 1942 and there was no longer any reason to differenciate. If you send me an e mail I can send a photo that should help you determine what you have.

By the way the only other 2 bottom Little Ganius plows were numbers 10 and 12 which both used screw cranks in place of levers for depth and levelling. The plows with cranks were used around orchards as levers of the number 8 would catch on trees.

The plow has a trailor type hitch and a trip mechanism (no hydraulics). Thanks
