Looking at the above tractor for sale at $5,5000 OBO. Man said it was in great shape, can have a mechanic check it out and I will if we get that far. It has no attachments that come with it but he may give me a rear blade. It is a great looking tractor red small front wheels but I have no idea what I am in for. It appears the engine is painted red, is that factory paint or should I be concerned. What about the small close set fronts wheels, does this cause stability concenrs? I have 60 acres of rolling hills with large pines trees some 10 acre fields. I would use it to level the roads, push the snow, cut the hay, move stuff. I have no structure to house it but do have a Tuff shed I can park it on the side. What about the price? What will it cost for a bucket, bush hog? I am not mechanicially inclined but I understanfd if you own a tractor you will be. I do not want to be working on the tractor I want to be driving the tractor. What other questions should I ask? Any help is appreciated. First time tractor buyer

Bill.
I am with Hugh on this. If you dont want to be wrenching on a tractor you better not buy a 1940's 50's or 60's tractor.
Now if wrenchin a bit is not out of the question.
Old Farmall are easy to work on. You should be able to find a nice wide front Farmall H with a loader for under $2000. maybe a little more if its in real good shape.
Check out the photo add section on this site to get am Idea of prices.

Bill: Like others said bit on the high side both on price and hp. If you are looking for an M or SM and can spend $5,000. you could get a 656 which really is a Super M with comfort. If you believe you are going to buy a $5,000. tractor and not have to use wrenches, you had better sit down and take stock. These old tractors are only viable to the guy that notice the problems early on, and knows how to fix it.

There were no 50HP Farmalls in 1953. The Super M was rated 43 max belt HP as per Nebraska test #475. $5500 should buy 2 nice Super M's.

I agree here. You can possibly coax 48 to 50 hp out of a Super M, but it requires high compression pistons, overbore, maybe a few tricks with the intake manifold, and perhaps a 450 head. As Rick said, go and get two Super Ms for $5500.

Sounds like the price $5500 is a little on the high side.
