I have over an acre of lawn with small hills to mow, plus need to snowplow long driveway. Need advise on best tractor plus best investment retention.

Thanks!

I have mowed with cubs and a super A, and i'll tell you my opinion... the cub is not enough tractor to run the mower decks that are put under them. I have run cubs with fresh engines with oversized pistons, and i still feel this way. I just bought a super A, and I am not at all sorry. This tractor will mow anything from the back forty, to the 18 green. Just my 2 cents.

Robert with only an acre+ to mow I would go with a large lawn tractor. I have a JD 430 diesel and a 4 year old Agco Allis both with 60" decks and about 20hp, either one will move a lot of snow and mow more grass in an hour than a cub ever thought of.(If you get 3ft at a time disregard the part about snow)

I have a 53' Super A and it is a working son-of-a-gun. I have about 3 acres to cut so i guess i am partial to the larger tractor. From your size jobs needed, then either would probably be fine. Good luck!

Robert: While I agree the Cub does hold it's value, I cant quite figure why. A non sleeved engine some of them must be close to limit on rebuilds. Super A having sleeves can be rebuilt forever.

I have used both and I really cant see any comparison. Super A is 3-4 times the tractor the Cub is, I don't care what IH or Nebraska have to sat on matter. I am talking everyday use.

I also own a SUPER "A" It is a very neat little tractor but I am a little more than leary of it on slopes. Other than that it is a great little giant and a lot more tractor than the cub. I have been a RED GUY for a lot of years and love ALL of them. good luck!!

It depends how bad you want to own an older tractor. In this day and age, older tractors are not the best choice primarily because of not having live PTO and range of ground speeds. To stick with an older IH, you maybe should try to find a 154, 185 or 184. These were made for mowing, have live PTO and can be equiped with a blade or a snow blower.
I have a Super A, Cub and a 154. I would would recommend the 154, 185 or 184 for needs.
If you want life to be easy, go buy a new tractor and equip it to meet your needs.
My neighbor and I sometimes comment that maybe we should buy one good new compact tractor instead of continuiously repairing a yard full of old ones.
Good Luck,
K-Mo

Robert, One thing I have learned as a red tractor man, is never knock another red tractor. Each model was designed for a specific purpose. I own a 42 A and 49 Super A. But to tell the truth I would love to own a Cub! For your particular use I think the Cub would suit your needs, only because of your modest mowing needs and plowing needs. No matter what you decide you will be happy with any of the above tractors! My opinion.

I own both a Cub and an A, though the A is in the process of being restored. I also drove an A for many years on our dairy farm. The A is definitely more tractor than the Cub, particulary the Super A, with its hydraulics. However, I mow my lawn (1.5 acres approx.) with my Cub and a 5' belly mower, and it's perfect for the task. These tractors are about dead even as far as collectibility and resale value go, and I believe you'd be happy with either. Provided you take reasonable care of your tractor, the chances are better than average that you can use it for 10 years and still get your money back out of it upon resale--they're both tough, thrifty little tractors that love to work.

I love my cubs, but I would also like to have an A or Super A. Both are versatile and both will hold their value if maintained. Keep in mind the cub is only 9 HP and the PTO runs @ engine speed and in the reverse direction from normal so PTO implements must be ones made specifically for the cub. Other than that, they're a great little tractor. I'd snag the first of either one that was a good deal.

In my opinion, a Super A is a lot more tractor than a Cub. More horsepower, more weight, more gears to select from, standard speed & direction on the PTO, more options on equipment and attachments and they are easier to work on.

Prices on the two are comparable (at least where I am). Both should hold their value well. Both are valuable as collectables or as work tractors.

Again, that's my opinion, others may see it differently.

I like the Super A better and the main reason is they are easier to work on in my eyes anyway. But I have a friend that has a Cub and he mows plows snow and works a good size garden. So to each their own.
