I needed to move my 73 966 awhile ago. She started up just like always, put her back in her usual spot shut her down just fine. BUT what is that noise, The starter is still running! I grab a wrench and get the batt cable off it stops. So I check the starter button, Tap on it a little, set the cable back on batt, starter starts up again! Then unmount the porition on the dash that has the Tack, light switch,& starter button. Remove the two wire clips from button, set cable back on batt, starter takes off again.
What is in this circuit, that I am missing that would cause the starter to actavate without the starter button being depressed. ANY & All Help is sought. Thanks John A.

Jim: I still believe the solinoid shorting out started my problem with 1066 years ago. In the second post was just pointing out what happened from running it that way. What the rebuilder did is a bit unrelated, although that hapened in the repair process.

John: It just hit me, one what happened to my tractor. Your starter drive is probably toast. Your starter probably stayed engaged while you were moving tractor. That is precicely what happened with mine and it destroyed the starter drive. I shouldn't have forgotten that one as it ruined the armature as well.

I went off to the starter rebuilders, he repaired on the spot, back to field, installed starter, no go. I said to operator hit that starter buttom again. Sure enough starter was turning backwards. Back to the rebuilders, DT466 in trucks uses same starter, on the other side of ring gear. He had never asked and I had never said TRACTOR. Same starter, different armature.

Hugh, Thank-you for responding back, at least I've got an idea on what went haywire with it. For it was spinning/running when I shut her down. I only ran her for about 10 min when it happened. Thank-you again,
John A.

John: You could be lucky. I don't remember for sure but I have a gut feeling my tractor worked all morning. I know it was at noon we discovered the problem. My starter probably got quite hot.

John: I has to be in solinoid. It apparently has crossed starter terminals without activating the starter drive. Your just jogging my memory a bit as I believe this happened to my 1066 once. I forget exactly what happened. It has to be solinoid.
