Running rough/dark smoke after cleaning gas tank.

My 300U was running great till some 50 years worth of gunk in the tank plugged up the fuel line. The gas barely came out the tank at all. I have cleaned the tank and replaced the lines with help from forum members and now gas flows great.

The problem is now that the tractor runs great for 30 seconds and then sputters, and runs rough with a lot of dark smoke coming out the exhaust. It runs best with the air cleaner disconnected.

I checked the float and needle valve and they seem ok. What have I done? Help.

sounds like you are getting too much fuel. The fact that it runs better when it gets more air tells me you are running very rich.

I would think from the symptoms on your tractor you have effectively cleaned the fuel system and have a good flow of fuel. You say it runs well for 30 seconds after start, dark smoke and removing the air filter improves running, these symptoms are typical of overfuelling. Are you able to lean out the mixture now to see if the running improves.
I do not know the 300U or the adjustment procedures.
Good luck anyway and please post the fix when you find it!.

I don't know about your tractor, but my Super M has a little screen on the end of the fuel line where it goes into the carb, its a separate piece threaded into the carb. When the screen is all dirty the tractor runs lousy. Could be the problem on yours too.

I would bet that you got some "gunk" in your carb. It might be keeping the float from shutting off or something. As for running better with the air cleaner disconnected - only a clogged air cleaner could be doing that.
