If you are talking about the seals in the end of the rear axle carrier out away from the rear end you need to remove the rear wheel. Those take either 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" socket. The end cap just takes a 9/16" socket. The part numbers are: seal - 60 254 D, felt washer - 351 118 R1, gasket - 351 117 R1. My local Case/IH dealer was able to get them in within a week.

The new seal will be thinner than the old one so just position it within the axle cap so that it rides on a good place on the axle.

Be careful when jacking/blocking up the rear-end when removing the wheel. After putting everything back together besure to drive the tractor a little and then re-tighten the rear wheel.

I won't say that your procedure won't work, because I don't know for sure, but there is not supposed to be oil at the end of the axle -- that's a grease seal. The inner seal is leaking, meaning the axle needs to be removed. Replacing only the outer seal may or may not permanently fix the leak. I wanted to be sure so I replaced both seals on mine, a lot more work.
