When I paint my W4 IH I suppose I should paint the radiator red to be as close to original as possible, or am I mistaken?

The radiator has a nice coat of black paint on it now, any ideas on what I could do to make the red paint stick better?? I s there something I could spray on it first??

I found a NOS IH rad still in the box for my 10-20 and it was black.. If you paint it use a spray can of flat black and put it on THIN. Thick paint will tend to insulate it and not let heat transfer as well. High heat paint isn't nessesary, the rad shouldn't get that hot.

I had my radiator stripped then primed and painted only the tanks an sides red. I left the fins totally bare. I would not recommend painting the fins. Also use a high grade catylized paint on the rest or the heat may cause it to peal.

Leave it black, the dark color will dissipate heat more easily.

i work for a major radiator manufacturer and we produce rads for cat and jd..new holland and such..they leave the factory black..some get painted the color of the machine if they are installed on the line before the frame and things are painted..otherwise they are black..i would leave it black for the reasoning that more coats of paint hurt the ability of the fins to dissipate the heat, not loose air flow.

I'll put my vote in for leaving it black. I did on my H. I don't know if they were black or red from the factory. Anybody know?

I was told to leave'em black. If you put another coat of paint on it , you just lose air flow room. Maybe somebody else will have more smarts on it than me. Those are my thoughts.

I think they came from the factory red, but any time I ever sent one to the radiatory shop it came back black. I would leave it alone.
