I just aquired a 1945 Farmall H and am not familiar with the method used to check the crankcase oil level. It must be obvious or just a Farmall well kept secret. I don't see a dipstick anywhere.

looks like that pretty well sums it up.I have seen them with a small dipstick in place of the top petcock,it is only about 3 inches long but that also works.

There are two petcocks on the oil pan. If oil comes out when the upper one when it's opened, it's full.

Before the days of oil filters you were supposed to drain a quart out from the lower one and refill to the upper one before a day's work.

Actually, SN 501 had an oil filter. You drained to the level of the lower one to remove impurities caused by kerosene/distillate that was was run in many of them. When running on gasoline, or in a gasoline only engine, drainage was not necessary.

Look on the side of the oil pan. You will see 2 petcocks. If oil comes out of the bottom one, you're OK. If not, fill until oil runs out the top one. Oil level should be maintained between the two.
