what you have been told is correct. I own 2 48 MD's and when i shut them down i let them idle for a bit. I switch back to gasoline and let it run. I shut the gas off and let the gas burn completely out. after the engine shuts down i switch the lever back to diesel mode. Been operating them this way since 1948 and haven't had a problem.

Shutting it off on gas cleans the carbon out and cools the head down because of the compression ratio. But always change compression lever to diesel after engine has stopped. The starting valves should cool in the their seat. This comes from the MD operators manual.

WOW. When I saw the title i was ready to answer you about my doctor of medicine. I always dress super nice when i have to go to visit him. Perhaps just go slouchy would be one alternative. I really do not want to turn him off just tease him a bit.

I can tell you what the manual says Andy. Let the engine cool at idle on diesel for awhile. Give it time to stabalize.
Then, switch the engine over to gas before shutting it down. They say to reverse the starting procedure.
I have a 450D, and when I try it this way, most of the time it dies when going from diesel to gas.
I think the main thing when shutting it down is to let it idle and cool off before shutting it down.
Then, after stopping the engine make sure you have the compression lever in the gas position so the valves will not warp.
I do not know if this is correct or not, but we have had the 450D since 58 and never cracked a head or warped a valve.
Best of luck,
Bill

The reason for running on gas befor shutting down is to equalize the temp. between top and bottom of head. Had not heard about putting lever back on disel after shutting it off makes since. I never did on my 400D had no problems. Problem I always had I was always out of gas or about out.
