My '52 Cub has started puffing a little bit of smoke (greyish in color). Plugs don't look wet (just a little bit of soft black soot). It's not using oil between changes. I checked the compression as follows: 100 pounds on 3 of the cylinders and about 102 on the fourth cylinder. Also, I ran the motor with a vacuum gauge attached and it read a very steady 17 & 1/2 inches.

Is it time for rings maybe ?

Re-torque your head. You might be experiencing just a small amount of seep causing a puff of white/gray smoke when you start up.

No way would I consider rebuilding that engine at this time. Make sure the ignition and carburetion systems are in top conditon- and enjoy the tractor!

I'd have to say your compression is pretty good, I wish mine was that high. I've only got 80 on mine. Maybe your gas is too rich, and you need to adjust the carb. How is your timing?
