I have just purchased a 1943 M and all the gears work, but you can not get up to speed in 5th. Even if you try to hold it in gear, it jumps out. When shifting the stick shift goes in deep in all the gears but 5th, it feels like it only goes in half way and has a positive stop. Also does the transmission and rear end take standard gear oil (85-90) It also has a belly hydraulic punp, what grade of fluid shoud it use.

Thanks Greg

I have fixed this problem on several Hs.. Sometimes you can get by cheap with new detent springs and balls, and sometimes you have to replace the gear, main shaft, shift fork, detent springs, detent balls. inspect every part carefully, and make sure to look for any type of wear on the main shaft. If the gear likes to "walk" out of place you may have to replace the main shaft (my experience). detent balls and springs can be bought at your case ih dealer. If you need any new gears, shafts, or shift forks, send me a email, as I will have NOS ones available.

I have a '41 H (similar transmissions) and it jumped out of fifth. I oppened it up and the pilot bearing was out, put new one in, and works like it came out of the factory. It also could be a wore 4th-5th sliding gear. Most of these tractors are about 60yrs old, so you kind of expect this kind of wear. Also, if it is the bearing, when going down hill in second, there may be a nock in trans. with bearing out, it drops the shaft down on the reverse.

I forgot to mention what bryce did. one way to check the front transmission bearings is to take the belt pulley or cover plate off and see if you can lift the main shaft upwards. This will usually give you some indication as to the condition of the bearins.

i would imagine that your 4th/fifth sliding gear is worn out. when new the teeth on the fifth gear are only about a quarter of an inch long. that is why when you shift into high the gear shift doesn't move very far.i use 140 gear oil in the rear ends of our m's, it's still thinner than the original oil. i use the same oil in the hydraulic system as i put in the motor.

5th is direct so it don't move as far. If you can't hold it in gear you most likly need new gear
should not be hard to hold in gear because just a ball detent and spring to hold it could be bent fork you can see if you take the belt pully housing off or the plate were the housing would go
and see if 5th is going all the way.
