Bob,

I'm re-wiring my '44 H. A 12V conversion was done a number of years ago and it was done poorly. I have the following new parts on the tractor now:

1 - Single-wire alternator with internal regulator

2 - Ignition coil with internal ballast resistor

3 - Delco Remy starter

4 - Push button starter switch (left of steering support)

5 - Push-pull on/off (ignition?) switch lower right of steering support)

6 - Delco Remy after market distributor (replaces magneto ignition)

I'm ready to begin making the wiring harness, but need some advice here. I'm looking at your wiring diagram from your article titled "Step by Step 12-Volt Conversion". Can I use this same plan for my H with the following changes?

1 - Eliminate wire coming from connector #2 of the Delco 10S Alternator (I have a single -wire alternator).

2 - Eliminate the warning light on the wire coming from connector #1 of the Delco Alternator (the starter shop said that single-wire alternators don't require the added resistnce)

3 - Eliminate the ballast resistor to the coil (my ciol has an internal balast.

4 - Connect the starter switch between the positive pole and the starter.

What do you think, will this work?

Hi Bob

I'm a home owner attempting to try and hook-up 6ea outside postlights. I've installed 6 lights yo my retaining wall, I've run all the wires(black to black and white to white, plus ground). I'm tring to tap into the gfi plug that is located on the outside wall. But when I try to connect the wires I keep tripping the circuit.
Is there something I'm doing wrong.

Slappy - Yes to all except: The existing magento-type pull switch for a magneto will NOT work with distributor ignition. (Magneto switch is a "grounding" type switch - it has only one terminal). Need to replace it with a battery ignition pull switch or similar two terminal (single pole single throw) switch.

Also be aware that a single wire alternator may not spin fast enough to excite itself on your H. You may need to install a smaller pulley to make it spin faster. You will know for sure the first time you start the tractor.

Thanks Bob,

I should have mentioned that the ignition switch is not the magneto type. Also, I had the shop put the smallest pulley on the alternator they could find. It's not much bigger than the shaft. I hope to put get the wiring together this week. I'll let you know how it goes. Again thanks for all of your help.

Yeah John - the 2 wire setup (actually a "3 wire" setup due to the number of connections at the alternator) has a much lower energizing speed than the 1 wire units. However once they start charging, both the single and 3 wire units will charge the same amount at low speed.

Note also the 3 wire alternator costs about 1/2 as much as a single wire unit!
