There should not be a solenoid on a 45-A You must have the starter locked up. Unbolt the starter an check to see that the starter drive isnt locked on the ring gear. The post should never glow or even sizzle if it does something bad is happening.

geneb is probably right on starter lock up on ring gear, Paul could also be right and your starter is toast. There is no doubt you have a bad battery connection also and indeed that could be source of your problem. The bad battery connections often cause the starter lock ups. It can also be normal wear on starter drive and ring gear reaching the rebuild point.

Battery cables and connections often overlooked. I started my Farmall Super A couple days back, only the 3rd time since last fall. Started great. After I had it running awhile I shut it down and in looking it over cables and connections are bad. I removed battery and cables to clean things up. The ten year old battery is staying but the cables and connections will all be new when it goes back together. $15. is a cheap fix, and good voltage and amps are the life of both battery and starter.

My Super C did this about 2 years ago. On the third try it smoked the pos. batt cable. Starter had gone bad. Had to get it rebuilt.Fixed my problem.
