I am in the market for a mid to late 50's Farmall M or super. I am mainly looking for a larger tractor to put a fr end loader on ( I have a 8n now) and also I just want a big tractor and I happen to like the Farmall series.
Questions are this
1 what years have a 3 point like or similar to my n?
2 What is the difference between a M and SuperM
3 Were any of these ever offered with a wide front end?
4 What size loader can I use on one of these (bucket size)
5 Where can I get the specs of these tractors
Any other opinions and suggestions are greatly welcome. Thx in advance for all your help

Well, I have a farmall M.. put a loader on it and it was REALLY tough to steer without Power Stearing. Has plenty of Horse Power however, with the loader the older hydraulic pumps don't have as much "push" after market add on's for the 3 point run anywhere from 200.00 to 450.00 They are fun tractors.. I'll never sell mine.. but like anything you can only do so much.. defiently keep your eye open for a 460 or 560 Farmall if you are gonna do alot of loader work.. that's my 2Cents

I gotta get with steven on this,I might suggest a 460 or 560 row crop, add an Ih wide front end you can get aftermarket and that depends on much loader work you are doing. Also in many cases the unit will have a 2pt fast hitch you can usually convert that to a 3pt for less than 200 and you would have a 6 cylinder unit
just my thoughts
have fun

If you just like the style I would get a 300, 350, or a 400, 450. They have the live PTO (usually), live hydraulics and a two point that can be easily converted to 3 point.

Everyone says you need a wide front end but if you are looking to do the same job as your 8N a narrow front end is fine. We used a narrow front end for years on a 560 and a 656 to load manure and silage. We finally put a wide front on the 656 when we started loading big round bales.

1 what years have a 3 point like or similar to my n?
Never came with any sort of 2 or 3 point. Some have aftermarket 3-point on them. saginawcountytractor.com has a nice 3 point hitch.

2 What is the difference between a M and SuperM
The M had a 248 cubic inch engine (likely upgraded to 264 ci).
The Super M had some upgrades in the transmission, faster 3rd and 4th gears, and a 264 cubic inch engine, plus live hydraulics on Stage II Super M.

3 Were any of these ever offered with a wide front end?
M and Super M were offered from the start with wide front end. However, for loader work I recommend an aftermarket Schwartz wide front (around $750 new, $400 used).

4 What size loader can I use on one of these (bucket size)
Any size you want, just depends how much you want to break. Also depends on how the loader mounts. Quick tach loaders put a lot of stress on the frame (torque tube) that the M and Super M can't handle. I've seen a couple broken in half as a result. If you plan on using a Farmhand F10 loader you can have a 8 foot bucket and not harm the tractor, because that is a type of loader that is easy on the front end.

5 Where can I get the specs of these tractors
Some specs are available at>Link

Keep in mind that neither of these has live or independent PTO, you push the clutch the PTO stops. The Super M may or may not have live hydraulics driven from the distributor on the engine. (if the battery is under the seat, you have live hydraulics) If you don't have the distributor pump, the hydraulic stops when you push the clutch too.
