MW pump.Took ito local dealer(Tipton,IA,good people).Replace front seal, check for out put,ok.Ready to remount, gears look great but there's an obvious groove in the housing from the big(cam?)gear grinding agin it.Gear seems in proper position now and tight, never have heard any grindingnoise.Evidence of a past problem that was fixed ora new headache?

Probably evidence of a past problem (broken cam gear hub) that's been fixed.

If the cam gear nut loosens or falls off, the motor will continue to run while the gear flops back and forth on the cam shaft until the hub wallows out and the camshaft key shears. While this is going on the cam gear will "saw" marks where it hits inside the timing case. Or the load imposed by the live pump could have caused the original cam gear to break, again leaving the marks you see.

So long as the cam gear shows no axial (fore and aft) play whatsover, you should be OK. (Note: The cam gear is the big one that drives the distributor and hyd pump)
