My Farmall M came with one 13.6x38 and one 12.4x38 when I bought it. The gears constantly whine while travelling straight. I assume this is a differential compensating for the difference in tire circumference. I have an opportunity to swap the 12.4 tire and rim for a 13.6. Please don't shoot!!! Would a jd rim be a direct swap? or do I have to break both rims down to swap the tires? I would repaint it.

I think both rims are the same 38".As far as the whining goes if you got plenty of fluid, you probably have a worn bearing or two, although they do whine some.Likew my daddy useta say "MAKE HER CRY A LITTLE"

A 38" drop- center rim from a JD A,B or G should fit right on your M. A double- bevel 38" from a JD 50,60, or 70 or later tractor will not, assuming your M's cast centers are original style.

Wouldn't be surprised if both your rear rims are the same size - someone just mounted a smaller tire on one of them.

Regarding the gear whine, I doubt it is due to differential gear action from mismatched rear tires. Even in road gear these parts move too slow to generate whining noises. More likely it's bad bearings or worn countershaft drive gear in the transmission. Or as Red suggests it may be low on 90 weight gear oil. That'd be the 1st thing to check...

Fair question A. Give ME Miller a call on that. Their phone number is in the adverstiser's section. I would think some of that gear noise could be related to that but don't be surprise if its still there. Do you have 13 gallons of 90w in there?
