A bit of information for anyone who is interested.
To determine dwell for an engine, divide the degrees of a circle by the # of cylinders. (360 / 6 = 60) for example. Then multiply the answer by 2/3. In the case of the example 6 cylinder engine, the dwell will be 40 degrees.
An 8 cylinder engine has a dwell of 30 degrees and a 4 cylinder engine should have a dwell of 60 degrees.
Dwell is the amount of time (expressed in degrees of distributor rotation) that the points are closed allowing electricity to build magnetism in the coil which then produces the spark at the instant the points open.
This is a long answer for a simple question, but who ever said things were simple??

Wayne's on target with the dwell information. And our buddy down the list aways is probably correct in saying that IH didn't bother to specify a dwell reading. He wasn't very tactful in the way he said it, however.... Dwell meters weren't all that common back in the '40s, and that type of distributor is not one of the easiest to set using a dwell meter. It is however, a useful tool for checking to see if your skills with a feeler gauge are as good as they used to be. For those not used to using a feeler gauge, remember to keep it CLEAN when setting the points.

Ardie,as the gentleman was trying to explain (BEFORE) taking his Ritalin pill is that these machines are not like trying to tune a 68'Z28 or a 70' Superbird 426 Hemi. Just use have someone turn the crank till the lowest point of the dist cam is lined up with the points and simply gap it with a fealer gauge to .0020" These machines are way to robust to ever need a precise Dwell meter check. good luck and Merry Christmas

Forgive me if I misread your post, but points are set on the high side of the cam, as this gives the maximum opening. The correct gap is .020, you put in an extra 0.

Mr. Point!

Having lived beyond three quarters of a century I had assumed I come to know a little bit about somethings. Now you've made me feel very humble, and convinced me I don't know anything about anything? On behalf of myself, and probably others as well, I want to thank you for saving us from ignorance.

.20 = (200 thousants ) = 1/5 0f an inch or nearly 1/4 inch ( a big point gap ) i think you meant .020 (20 thousants )

Hey there TO THE POINT, you must have awfully thick feeler gauges and one heck of a spark if you can get them to run with settings of 0.13 and 0.20!

Actually, I believe that dwell would be a more accurate way to set the points. But hey, you're supposed to be the genius.

Nice to see someone else can take over answering questions, since I have been informed I don't know what I'm talking about lately.

Message for Steve, You better not stop posting. I'm almost 3 times your age, but I learn a lot from you and everyone else. I don't even own an H, but I still enjoy reading about them. Hopefully, in the next few years I will be able to get one. For now, I am getting ready to replace the seals, etc. in the back end of my B. Wish I could get you, Scottyny, The Red and some of the others to spend a few days here in Illinois. Maybe I could get it done right.

Hey Steven I know how you feel as about a year a go I was given grief when I was talking about the first pull on a sled With my new old H and didn't chose the right gear and did do poorly. mind you I didn't know I had one cylinder almost dead and had a brain attack stroke recently. Or I had not been on a tractor for over 30 years and did not remember of much from back on the farm. I recall you had some nice things to say. One other comment would be you will make one fine teacher at your young age you have a wealth of knowlge and skills and probably forget more about tractors that I will ever remember or can learn. So my words of wisdom Screw them and keep posting I ned the info. Thanks your friend Ron in Az... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
