I've been spending a lot of hours on the old M the past few weeks, I miss having a radio. I've looked at TSC and other farm stores for a 6V radio that just mounts on the fender or other handy spot. All I can find is 12V. I'm looking for the type we used years ago that had great volume(folks a mile away could hear the game). Any of you found such a critter??

I have a Huskey, i think thats what it is, mounted on the opposite side of the rear light on the back of our M. Has a switch for either 12v or 6v...Amish neighbors like it when were buzzing wood..haha!

Instead of a radio, you might consider a pair of sound attenuating headset with a built-in radio receiver. I've used a set for several years (Elvex brand from the Northern Hydraulic catalog) - they work great. In addition to having good reception, they cut down dramatically on the ambient noise of the tractor - so it's much easier on your hearing. Economical to operate too - a pair of AA batteries will run them for 30 - 40 hours.

Just a thought - should he consider resistor spark plugs to eliminate static?

Warning if you convert the 6 volt to 12V, keep in mind that the 12 volt radio will be for negative ground. You may have to isolate the radio case from the tractor frame.

Check Radio Shack. They may have a 6v to 12v converter. Essentially, it would just be a step-up transformer. It won't work with heavy current stuff, but a little radio should be no problem. Then, you can get one of those 12v tractor radios that mount really easily and cover over from the weather.

Transformers won't change 6v DC to 12v DC. Transformers only work on alternating current. In order to step up 6v to 12v, the step up device would have to turn the dc to ac with some sort of a switching mechanism, transformer it up, and then rectify and filter it! Some of the old tube-type automobile radios had a mechanical vibrator to handle the switching duties. Just a thought, would one of the current boxed fender mount radios have room inside for a 12 volt battery of some sort - you'd have to recharge or replace once in a while. There are some neat little 12volt gel cells available for use in alarm systems.

You should find one in a junk yard. Lots of old chev. pickups, 50-53 type around. If you can't find one in a junk yard. Try www.chevysofthe40s.com
they deal with old chev. cars and trucks.
