How many SMTA were there built? Recently I had a discussion with a neighbor on the value of a SMTA. I told him (one of the reasons) they were higher than a regular "M" was because there only a few thousand built. Am I right or wrong?

There were 26,522 Super MTA's built. That includes gas and diesel. The diesels are rarer than the gassers.

I looked back, and I see you have "gas and diesel" MTA's. Now, in my book it says slightly more than 2700 were diesel, but wouldn't that be included in the overall serial numbers? We have exactly 3,000 in difference between us, which just goes to show how shaky all this information is. Thanks Steven@nd.

I don't know why this doesn't make sense because in my IH Tractor Data Book by Guy Fay it says there were 26,924 produced. It then says there were 2,705 diesel and 64 were gas high crops and it doesn't have numbers for diesel high crops. It also lists the serial numbers as 60,001 to 83,523 which would only allow for 23,522 to be made.

Who knows what is right? I guess I would trust Guy Fays information, but is it 26,924 or 23,522??

Steven, you gave me my laugh of the day. My information was straight out of Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar's Farmall Letter Series Tractors originality guide. I think we need to have a little chat with Guy...

I never knew that. I had heard that only 5 or 6 thousand SMTA's were built, but I looked it up in my serial number book. There were 297,717 M's built, 52,126 Super M's built, and 23,522 SMTA's built. Now, I see our numbers disagree by about 3 thousand. I don't know if we'll ever know an exact figure for any tractor built from that era, becuase frankly I don't think anybody had a splinter of a thought that the serial numbers would be so sought for. Think of what we may be making today that 50 years from now people will be scouring for serial numbers. A SMTA is in my wish list, if I can find one for a good price, but it is in a way relieving that there are nearly that many out there.

You don't do production numbers from serial numbers- there are a variety of reasons why they won't agree. The IH Archives does have more precise production numbers for the SMTA series tractors than what I had to work with for the data book- should give the precise breakdowns on the fuels and clearances.

Steven: that figure surprised me I would have thought 15,000 to 18,000. How many Farmall 400 and 450 were built, all I can find is the beginning serial for each year of production including the final year. 400 at 29065 and 450 at 21871. If you look at anual production runs of 560, I would expect the final year production for each to be in the 10,000 to 15,000 range. They are not much more plentiful than the SMTA. Especially the 450.

According to IH Tractors Data Book by Guy Fay there were 31,806 Farmall 400's produced total (all variations). There were 143 gas high crops, and 50 diesel high crops. There were 2,070 W-400s gas (952) and diesel (1,118).

As for the 450 there were 18,305 produced total (all variations). There were 6,961 diesel 450's. 55 high clearance gas 450. And 30 diesel high clearance 450.

ONLY 1,809 W-450s made! 1,108 of those were diesel W-450.

What about the smta L/Ps? There were about 500 retro fitted by farmall. If you look at this tractor it sure looks cool all cleaned up. All those copper lines polished out, theL/P Esign system ,All brass polished out, and the aluminam polish. Got one in my shop being restored. I think this is one tractor that everone is over looking. TO bad but that ok when its done its going to look SWEEEEE T [S#62453DS] my s cents Stew

I guess from other discussion on this, figures on these numbers are not very accurate. The beginning serial numbers for final year I quoted you were from YT.
