I may have an opportunity to purchase a 460 high utility. It looks for the most part like a utility except it has an adjustable rear axle and 38-inch rear wheels. Can anyone tell me how many of these tractors were produced? Any help would be appreciated.

I460 Hi-Utlity was made by IH from back of Farmall 460 with front of I460 with longer or taller spindles, parts book lists it as such, not any records kept that I am aware of to determine how many actually built, pretty rare tractor.

I read an article on these at one time suggesting that IH never produced any of them. The article suggested that they were turned out by independant shops and that all that needed changing was rear axles and wheels to Farmall. They fabricated a longer spindle and spindle housing for front end. Look your tractors over, and come back with more. I am curious as to acuracy of the article.

I am also curious. If you were to take a regular 460 utility and put larger rear wheels on it wouldnt the ground speeds be a lot faster than normal? And the name plate on ours actually says "460 HI-Utility" on it, would an independent shop go to that extent to actually change the nameplate?

Curt: The actual article that I read concerned the 350, Very likely if independant shops were doing this with the 350, IH would decide to get in on the act for the next model being the 460. If you also look ahead into mid 70's after some of the smaller Farmalls had been droped, IH did this very thing with a lot of the 574,674, 584, 684, etc. Probably that is the history of the Hi-utility in a nut shell.

That name plate sounds quite convincing that IH did the actual model. I don't know about the speed item, one would naturally think that Utility and Farmall models had a different gear ratio. However in the case of the A and AV the same ratio was used for both. I found that one hard to believe as I believe the difference would be greater there than with 460. I have a SA and 130 I am positive are different ratio, however I am told not so by certain former IH parts men. On the 300 the Farmall and utility have the same axle carrier, I expect 460 would be the same, so the axle would fit.

Yes KB is certainly right that those tractors are very rare, we are fortuneate enough to own one tho. Very nice tractor. You get the handiness of a utility tractor and the ability to work with row crops all in one tractor. We still use it today, has lots of hours on it because it is used daily. I would say that soon hopefully that we retire this tractor and restore it because of its rareness. Sorry I cant answer your question. I also have searched for the # of those tractors made and still have no answers.

Sorry I can't tell you how many were built, but I do know that they are very rare.
