I have recently purchased a a 1946 "M". It's a great tractor but I have to have live hydraulics. The hydraulics on the tractor work good and I would like to leave that system intact.

First question, can I find a salvage tractor with a live hydraulic system on it and put that system on my tractor while keeping my system completely intact? How much would a "system" cost me and how hard are they to find?

I understand that I have to mount a pump in the area of the Magneto by way of an adapter plate off of a later model tractor. Do they make new pumps off the shelf that will bolt up to this mounting?

If I leave the other system in tact, will I have to have a resivor for the new system? How many gallons does this need to be to power most modern acessories?.

I have a M and H which I have converted to live hydraulics. I like to mount the pump at the dist. or mag. Would advise using heavier timing gears, but have gotten by with the originals, but I only use them to disc and mow, no loader. You can plum into the belly pump wich I did on M or make resivor, which I did on H. The resivor does not have to be laarge normally a gallon is plenty. If you are using the hydraulics hard and in hot weather would go larger. I have done belt drives and chains, really prefer dist drive, lot cleaner and simple.

Tried to buy a parts tractor (SH) for the hydraulics a couple of weeks ago. Engine was disassembled and missing parts, wheels and tries were trash, tin wasn't good. Went for $425. To much for me.

My 49 M that I got in July had add on hyd. It has a pump by the dist. The past owner said it was about $400 for it. I have a 4 gal res. where the old liftall was. It sticks down pretty far but works good. People said that you need stronger timing gears to handle the extra load.

Have a neighbor that added a hydralic system run by a roller chain from a gear added ahead of the crank pulley. He did an excellent job of tucking the pump up under the engine rails and protected by a massive mounting frame. He added an "L" shaped tank that holds about 15 gals of hydraulic fluid. The whole rig is very professionally done. His is a construction tractor and does exactly what he wants it to do. Good luck with your project. Dick
