I am restoring a 1940 Farmall (a) I also have a 1945 (a) that is for parts. The 1940 was strictly crank start, so I took the electric start bell housing from the 1945 and put on the 1940 that I am restoring. Now I am concerned that this is not correct.Does anyone know if the 1940 model was available with electric start as an option ? or were the 1940 models all hand crank start ?

thanks for your help

FAA18322 BUILT march 25,1940 was the first starter on an A OR 18282 March 18, 1940 according to GUY FAYS book so you can decide which figure you want to believe

I would save that clutch housing or torque tube witch ever it be called. I know a guy who was just about ready to give his right arm for one 2 years ago. He broke one and was important to keep tractor original. He allready has A with starter.

I think your question was "is it correct?" The starter was an option. I see nothing wrong with equipping a tractor with the available options, unless you are an absolute purist and want the tractor exactly as it came from the factory.

i have a 1939 [a] that iwas in a wreck with that broke one ear off of the housing. we put a 1946 housing for the. it bolted right up. don't forget to take fly wheel with starter ring on it on the tractor you are rebuilding. it was quite a ride but thanks to the big guy up above, not a scratch

My '40 has the casting for a starting motor and was covered with a plate when I bought it two years ago, all original. Details: serial number, FAB32441; 1940; bell housing casting number 8-1-J.

My 1940 A has no electric start provisions.
I am in the prosess of painting her. I use it to mow grass. It is a neat little tractor. I have rebuilt a lot of the tranny and PTO so if you need bearing numbers for the new bearings give me an email.

I seem to recall reading (somewhere between Guy Fay's Data Book, his Originality Guide, or maybe even the parts catalog)
that there was only a very short period at the beginning of the run in 1939 when electric starting was not an option. In other
words, by late '39 and certainly by 1940, electric start was available. Don't know when or even if they discontinued the torque tube without the starter mount.

I'm sure they had electric start A's at that time.My A was built right in that range and has a starter.
