What a gooey mess. Those seals have been leaking for a very long time. The brake drum will have to be turned. It got scratched from the brake band since half the pad was broken off. I simply used offset plyers and was able to pull out the two seals then yank out the seal retainer assembly. There is a tad more room manuevering the plyers around the axle as opposed to the H assembly. Basically the old seal assembly was composed of 3 pieces. I tapped in 2 new seals. Punch below for pictures.

That sure looked familiar to see the goo inside the brake housings. Take care of that scratch and irrigate it well as those bands had asbestos in them. In the pix taken through the PTO hole, it looked like there was anitfreeze in the rearend. Maybe it had some green colored 85-140 or plain ole 90W. I've seen red and dark brown but never green!

Progress looks good, keep up the good work!//FB

Bob that greenish look was due to the flash on the camera. You were looking at brand new 90W in there.

Red,
Great stuff!
That will be one beauty of a Red Iron when all done up.
So let me get this straight..... ..you took the old rear tires off yourself? Did you also put the new tire back on solo?

I took the pictures while a young gent from Tire Service Plus did the work. I wanted to document the remove/replace procedure.

I like the play by play you are giving us on your project.I think I better invest in a digital camera before I start my projects.I just repaired one of the brakes on my 656 and the seals on the bull pinion shafts aren't set up much different than your M.Seeing pictures of this type of work gives the rest of us an idea what we're up against when we work on our projects.Thank you and have fun!

Hey Red, you keep posting I keep having more questions. On the bottom of the brake band cover, there is a square head bolt, with a lock nut. What does this adjust? Thanks Gordon

the screw on the bottom of the brake cover is to keep the top side of the brake band from dragging on the top of the drum all day long.

Gordon that helps hold the shape of the brake band so you get an even grip on the drum when you press the pedal.

I am sure glad that changin the brakes on my H is easier than that but I still have to do that on my newly acquired Super MV. Thanks for the photos. They will help.

Bob The old raceway M is a 47 Model Farmall M that The Red located & bought close the Indianapolis raceway. He has dubbed this project Old Raceway M. If you click on the link, you will see a play by play of what he has done on this project so far. By the way nothin wrong with GREEN ONES either. I like em all. Have a great weekend..... ...Gordon
