After being told that I "probably" have low compression on my 1945 Farmall "A", I finally decided to check it myself. Bought a compression gauge and the four cylinders come out as 80, 80, 85, 80 and the second time came out as 82, 84, 90, 80. Does this sound okay or am I in trouble?

In answer to your questions: The problem is that it won't start using the starter or by hand cranking. However, I can pull it and start it and it runs beautifully. Several oldtimers have told me this is a symptom of low compression but another has indicated timing, points, or maybe the condenser. The magneto generates a fairly spark. Any other ideas or should I concentrate on the above? Thanks for the responses.

doesent sound all that bad if the engine still has the all fuel pistons in the compression is only 4.5 to 1 lots of them running around with comp in your range change oil put some new plugs in and go unless you are entering a pulling contest

the A has 5.3 to 1 compression ratio and the supper A has6.0 they are low copression motors to start with 80psi is good you did not state problem your having

How many times around do you crank it to get each reading?

Normal would be 95# to 100# so you are a little low, but I think it should run and they are within 10% of each other. Does it have much blowby coming out the breather when you run it?
