My 49 C is leaking where the axle housings are bolted to the transmission case on both sides. Do I have to open the trans and remove the axles and housing or can I slide housings off a few inches, clean the two mating surfaces and use silicone or a new gasket? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

You need to remove the pto housing off the back of the rear-end housing. There is a cap that bolts into the inner end of the axle bolting it to the bull gear. The cap is held with two long winded fine threaded bolts. A slick trick is to put a wrench/socket on the bolt and then spin the wheel. The opening from the pto is not very big so good luck.

My brother talked me into putting silicon on the new gasket. Big mistake. Just make sure the housing surfaces are clean and put the gasket on dry. The gasket can be bought through IH.

I replaced the left side gasket but an IH mechanic indicated that the right side can be done the same way. The inner grease seal is located a ways into the axle housing allowing rear-end grease to get to the inner bearing.

Good luck.

Randy

I think you will have to remove the axles to fix your problem. The C has two axle seals. The inside one is in the transmission housing where the axle carrier bolts to the transmission housing. The outside one is in the axle cap and bearing retainer at the outside end of the axle carrier. If you are leaking transmission oil out of the joint between the axle carrier and the transmission housing, it means that your inner seal is leaking as well as the gasket between the two items. If you just replace the gasket and get it to seal, you will just start leaking out the outside seal which is only designed to hold grease, not oil.

I recall that the inner seal is pressed into axle housing outboard of the inner axle bearing. Not sure you have enough clearance to slide axle away from the case...bull gear is right there.I would recommend removing bull gear and remove axle and housing.Clean old gasket and if no gasket is available, I use the liquid Gasket maker....Cat makes a good one....I would invest the time into new seal also while your there.....bearing is not bad investment either....I just don't like doing it twice....

Yes, you are correct. Should have looked at the parts book before I posted that. The inner seal is in the axle housing, so if the gasket between the transmission housing and the axle housing is bad, it would leak oil from the transmission. I agree, it looks like you can't slide out the axle housing without taking the axle loose from the bull gear, so the axle is going to have to be removed to fix the leak. If I was doing this job, I would certainly replace both of the axle seals while I was into it. I apologize for the bad info.

Thanks to all for the help. No problem, Haas, I appreciate the fact that you took the time to answer. I am not really looking forward to this job!
