We have a Farmall M (1952) and recently converted it from 6V to 12V, but it won't charge - any ideas? It wasn't holding a charge at the 6V and we thought by upgrading it, we'd find a change.

Tell me more. Did you convert it to an alternator or a generator? Using a good voltmeter, what kind of voltage do you have coming from the alternator/generator? Be as precise as possible. You should be seeing something around 13.8 volts. 13.0 volts would not be good enough. Take some readings and fill me in. I can go from there.

Okay - an update - the VOLT METER shows that the Battery is charging as the tractor runs - but the AMP METER on the tractor reads a high negative as the tractor runs - any ideas what would cause that?

Ann - If the voltmeter says it's charging while the ammeter shows a large discharge, the ammeter's reading "backward" on account of a polarity change when the 12 volt conversion was done. (I presume your M is now negative ground....) You can do like Red says and swap the wires at the ammeter, or simply leave it as is and just recognize the ammeter readings are reversed.

Are you now 12 volt negative ground vs. 6 volt positive ground? If so, swap the wires on the ampmeter.

Thanks all - JB is trying those suggestions now - he is hooking up the lights and agrees that it is probably reading "backwards."
