Wheel weights, inside or out?

I am adding another set of rear weights to my M. I have the wheels so that the hubs are away from the center of the tractor. They are set about three inches out on the axle and I have one set of weights on them now. These are on the inside of the wheels now. Does it make a difference in the stability of the tractor whether the weights are on the inside or outside of the wheels? I just wondered if having them spread out or towards the center made any difference, since I don't have ROPS so I'll take all the help I can get. I have the wheels set in for clearance purposes. BTW, does anyone have any front wheel weights for sale in the Oh.,Ind., or Ill. areas?

John S-B,
It won't matter at all if that is all you are adding! My ol M has 2 set on it , and will add
1 more shortly. Yes stability is better when the wheels are cupped out. Unless you are working
your tractor one set is plenty to derss up the wheels. I have seen old Ms in the TX panhandle
with Foundry made inside and outside cast weights
They are really sharp looking, but these combos
add about 600 lbs,on each rear wheel. It boils down to how much wt do you need to keep your tractor on the groung, not hopping or spinning excessily. How much work are you willing
to do , to place it in the poisition you want it!
Good luck,
John A.

Thanks for the info guys. I had a pair of split weights to put on so if they were better off on the inside it would'nt be a big deal. I need to put on a new seal on the axle anyway so this gives me an excuse to pull the wheels off.

I agree with the previous post regarding stability of the tractor. It is always easier to add or remove weights from the wheels if they are on the outside of the hub. If you are not concerned with the correct model front wheel weights, suitcase weights, which fasten to the front of the tractor frame, are cheaper, easier to install or remove, and are readily available. You will have to make a mounting bracket for the weights.

Good luck

Ray

Your tractor is more stable with caste iron centers of wheel dished out and slid out to the end of axle and with wheel weights mounted on the outside of wheels. Any other way will bring center of gravity closer to center of tractor, loosing stability. Mounting weights on inside of wheel doesn't seem like much difference but take a 15 pound sledge hammer and hold it next to your body and then hold it with your arm fully exstended outwards. It is alot harder to hold up with arms extended outwards. Same thing apply's when adding weight to the axle. It is alot harder to raise that 100 lb wheel weight at the end of the axle than it is right up close to the tractor. That is what gives you stability. If you are looking for stability I would mount both wheel weights to the outside of wheel.
