Can't figure this one out. Tractor starts and runs, but misses every 1 or 2 seconds, miss increases with engine speed. Have changed coil, distributor, points, condensor, plug wires. Tractor ran great till 2 weeks ago when helper was mowing with it. Compression checks 140 psi all four cylinders. If I uplug one or two cylinders, tractor runs smoother than with four! Overhauled two years ago. Any suggestions on what to try next would be greatly appreciated!

Gill, you might have a broken spring in your distributor. Since it gets worse as you speed up, the timing appears not to be advancing correctly. You will have to remove the breaker plate and you should beable to see if that is the culprit.

Gill,
Have you tried adjusting the low and high speed adjustments on the carb? Look at the spark plugs to see if they can tell you anything. With unleaded gas they should look gray to charcoal, not black or oily. Check for water in the fuel. As a last resort, check the valve lash and the timing with a timing light. If the timing isn't steady, your distributor shaft bushings may be worn. Check them for side play, and replace the rotor (you didn't mention changing that) while you're at it.
One more thing, check the battery. A weak battery can drag down the electrical system and cause a weak spark.

Let us know what you find,
Phil

Spark plugs are all black. What does this mean? I don't have access to a timing light and have never used one.

Gill your mixture is way too rich if they are black. I would lean the high speed mixture screw in until it starts to die then open it back up about a 1/4 turn and see if that helps.

The high speed mix screw is the longer one on the carburetor by the float, and the idle screw is the shorter one higher up that comes out at an angle, correct?

A couple more inexpensive suggestions to add to Phil's: Put in a new set of plugs - suggest D-21 or equivalent - and see what happens. Also replace the distributor cap - a cracked or carbon-tracked cap can cause misfiring.

This sounds more like ignition than fuel. Miss is often a sign of bad cap and/or rotor.

Replace the rotor and double check the gap on the points, they move around a lot when you tighten them down.

A cheapo timing light shouldn't be more that about $30, it's worth it.
