Hello all, Last night I typed a message on this discussion board asking a very simple question about a Farmall B. The response I got was pretty ignorant. I am 26 years old and I've been tinkering with old cars since 16. I just recently decided to try old tractors because they are great examples of American pride and engineering. They strongly appeal to me because they made this country great and I respect that. You're right "gene b", I dont know much about tractors but I'm here to learn. Why are you on this site?? To discourage new guys like me from joining a hobby? Now how would I know that a Farmall B has strait gears that are noisy?? Now I do "gene b", thanks, like I said I'm here to learn. So let's all remeber we all love the same thing. I'm not buying the B for other reasons but I'm buying one even though I don't know crap about them. Enough said. Thankyou to the 99.9% friendly people on this site.
Paul O

Are you kidding me? Have you seen some of the posts on here that tear people down to dirt and you are gonna cry over a to the point comment?

Maybe you have a sensitivity problem. Grow up, this is a man's world. Like another post said, maybe the quilting or candle making forum is better for you.

I 've taken the time to read what geneb said in his responce to your post. I believe you are just a wee bit over reacting. Gene can be sharp, he can be cutting and he can be quite kind in his comments. he has taken a few swipes at me when I deserved it. Five hours later on another post he will defend me to the hilt when right.

I am close to 60 myself, and farmed with Farmalls most of my life. My dad bought the first one the year I was born. There are some discussions on this forum that drive we older guys around bend. Farmall H is probably the worst, (more of them I guess. I have seen the same subject on board 3 places at once. The other one is someone responding to a question that he hasn't grasped himself.

I read this forum discussion for 6 months before I responded to or asked any question. I supose I respond to 15-20% of them now. I do however read them all unless off subject. To get the most out of this forum you have to be as good a reader as writer. You also have to be here quite frequently. Also you should be aware you can axcess archives for past discussions on a subject.

One might confuse this site with a "members only" country club the way this discussion sounds. I've been visiting this site for a while and never saw the rules and regulations on what questions were permitted. It makes one a little hesitant to participate. I guess you're not part of the good old boy network yet Paul. Don't feel bad, you now know about the noise in the "B" and maybe you can return the favor and teach spelling, grammar and punctuation.

That is another annoying item, people without the intestional fortitude to post their own name or regular handle.

Best keep your shirt on Paul O. Genes comment could easily be interpretted as good advice by anyone who wasn't so paranoid. If you are that thin skinned perhaps you would be more at home on the quilting forum, or perhaps one dedicated to collectors plates or figurines.

Geepers: None of you guys ever been in the ARMY? His comments were not all bad. No personal name calling or questions about family tree. His comments did't need to be harped about this much. gene b should be allowed a few less than perfect and helpful comments considering all that he has helped so far. You do not want helpful people around here?? You only want "perfect people?"
Ease up on gene b. Frank (on gene b's side)

Richard: If you need this "wonderful site" to answer your questions,...then don't bite the hands that feeds you the answers. gene b feeds lots ofgood answers so back off complaining about his comments. "Ungrateful complainers" fits this string. Frank

I agree Gene B has helped alot of people including myself. I own 3 farmall B's. When I have a question about one I look and am glad when he answers them because he seems to know his stuff. But I would be just as unhappy if he answered my question in that tone. But as everyone else i would get over it.

No matter how helpful Gene B has been in the past, the type of reponse he gave you was uncalled for. If he's having a bad day, then he should wait until he's feeling better before responding.

Are you sure that was GENE B?? or somebody uising his screen name? That sure doesn't sound like the GENE B who has helped me!
If it is - maybe he was juat in a cranky mood - we are all human after all and sometimes a bad day can get the best us in a foul mood.
Gene B (the real one) is usually very helpful and friendly.

Paul,

Like you I'm a "youngun" (also 26) and occasionally I can tell one of my questions will get some of the guys rolling their eyes. Keep at it, one mean response doesn't mean we're all bad folks here.

As for the "howling" is it real, real loud? My Super M sounds like most everything else I've ever heard with straight gears. If you can, try and listen to an old Ford AA truck or something, the sound is usually real similar.

Now you want to get some flame, get into old snowmobiles and post a question on a board with mostly people who ride newer sleds.

Paul if you continue to read this forum I think you will find that gene b is direct and to the point and says what he thinks. At the same time he is one of the most helpfull and knowledgeable persons on the forum.

Some seem to have their own opinions as for mine.. I don't give a rats a** how helpfull or knowledgeable someone is it don't give them the right to be down right rude!!!!

I am also 26 years old and what the "old timers" teach us young guys is what will be past down to the next generation of tractor folks who buy then won't be able to talk directly to the ones who actually worked these machines when they were new. For the most part I will be able to tell that generation that those old farmers were some great people.. THE END

I was saddened to read the response that gene b made to your request for information.

I would like to reassure you that all responses that you will get on this site are not going to be like that.

Hope that this didn't sour you on the site or tractors.

We all have different personalities. When posting a question sometimes we get a great response and other times we may not get much or may even get a bit of sarcasm. I try to search the archives first to see if it's already been asked a hundred times. I can imagine the guys with real experience get tired of some of the same questions every couple of weeks. Those who take time to respond to those of us who really don't know are really going out of their way, and I for one really appreciate it. The go to guys on here that really know their stuff are great, and gene b is one of them. When you post a question be patient and you will get some good responses.
