SMTA Oil Pressure

The oil pressure on our SMTA seems to be running high. I don't know if the gauge works, but it's near the end of the high side (75?). When you shut it off the tractor diesels and then seem to run backward relieving pressure through the air cleaner. Any suggestions on our problems? Just overhauled it a year ago and this is the first time we had a chance to work it. Thanks in advance for your help.

YOUR OIL PRESSURE IS OK AND AS FOR THE DIESELING CHECK YOUR TIMING ALSO POSSIBLY IF ITS FRESH ENGINE AND ITS DOME PISTONS THE DOMES SOME TIMES ARE NOT THE SMOOTHEST AND CAN HAVE SOME "BURRS" THOUGH SMALL THE CAN CREATE HOT SPOTS ON THE PISTON AND CAUSE DETONATION OR YOUR PROBLEM .I USUALLY DO SOME POLISHING ON THE TOP WITH FINE EMORY CLOTH TO CLEAN THEM UP

Spec. oil pressure for both gas and diesel 6 series engines is 60-70 lb. at full governed speed. My MD runs right at 68 lb. Brian

IH engines in good shape (overhaul) typically seem to run high oil pressure. It is probably lifting the pressure relief valve in the oil pump which is OK. The best way to really know what pressure the system is under is to use a good calibrated gage on it.

The problem of dieseling is not related to oil pressure at all - other than the fact that there is no oil pressure present when the engine - thus the oil pump is running backward. There are some very hot surfaces in the combustion chamber that cause the fuel to ignite even without an arc at the spark plug. If you have oil coming out of the air inlet when it diesels, it is, in fact, running backwards. That oil is coming from the oil cleaner cup. Be sure to check that the oil level is up to the mark in the cup if the engine has blown some out.

Some things to do to relieve the dieseling problem are to let the engine idle for several minutes to "cool down" before shutting it off or turning off the fuel and let the carb run out of gas. If you do the latter, be sure to turn the ignition switch off before leaving the tractor.

You can also choke the engine just as it dies and it will not run backwards.

Try to run something on you fuel to clean the carbon from the engine and you should fix the problem.

I hae one tractor that has doen this for years and I can't seem to get it to stop so I just use the choke and will suffer higher engine wear if I am washing the cylinders with gasoline but I hit the choke just as it dies and don't think I'm getting much gas in the engine.
