I am looking at buying a 706 diesel. I was wondering what kind of horsepower this would have, and how much it would wiegh. I am also wondering if any of you have any experience with these tractors that you could share, like maintenance histories, pros and cons of these tractors, etc.
Thanks in advance!

I am one of these guys who never owned an 06 series tractor. I have had the D282 engine in two tractors though a 560D and 656D. Some people fault this engine, not me, I think they thought they were so busy they couldn't wait for glow plugs.

I will quote two extreems on this engine. My 656 turned its rated hp always and went 10,000 to first engine rebuild. averaged 1.2 Canadian gal. of fuel per hour for the hours on clock. My 560 was purposely turned up on hp and turned 95-100 hp always It had a set of pistons and sleeves at 7500 hours and at 11000 hours two of those pistons landed in middle of barn yard. This happened on silo blower while changing wagons. Should have taken time to throttle it down. The 560 used 1.75 gal of fuel per hour.

Both these tractors were quite efficient both on parts and fuel. You could use them on lighter work and they would respond on fuel consumption. I believe the 706 will do the same for you. I my opinion 56 series was the ultimate in IH design, it was down hill from there.

I have both 706[282 deisel] and 806 and like them both don't know horsepower on 706 but 806 has 81 on the dyno and there seems to be a big difference in power between them have changed the shifting to 66 series and it made abig difference there easy to work on and are great tractors

Well like Curt I have a 806D and have only driven a 706 once. I can tell you that most all posts I have read pertaining to 706 is good to great. Curt is right on the HP info. Pretty much all the "06 series of tractors are excellent. They have a couple of points that people like to harp on but I suspect that most of the people harping do not own one of these machines. I have a few tractors and a few newer than my 806 but it is by far my favorite because it just runs and runs and runs and seldom gives any trouble. I would say 706 is a good. Hope you get it.

Well, from this book i got here it says that the 706 diesel could have had 2 different size diesel engines. They had either a 282 cu. in. or a 309 cu. in. The 282 put out 72 PTO horsepower and the 309 put out 76 PTO horsepower. The 706 farmall weighed 7962 lbs. and the 706 international weighed 8501 lbs. As far as the experience that I have with 706's goes, I have a 706 gas, the gas engine was a major drawback but i think the diesel would make a good tractor. I do have an 806 diesel and that is a good strong tractor. Some people have told me they have had trouble with the TA's on them tractors, but I havent. We havent had any major problems with either tractor.
