I knew I needed some brake work on my 39 H and tore the brakes out to find out they were trash.I also had lots of gear oil which must be the oil seal. The shafts both had a bit of play from side to side ,think the 2 bearings need to be replaced also.Is that a big job to replace the bearings on the brake shaft, and any tips on how to do it?I took the cast housing bolts off but cant get the housing to come out? Any help will be great. Thanks Obie

I just did what you descroibed to my '48 H. First of all don't try to remove those pinion housings yet. They wrap around the bull gears. The trans/diff cover needs to be removed and then you can remove bull gears. To get pinion housings out you'll see 2 threaded holes in each...use the retaining bolts in these holes to remove housings. I've heard guys on here remove bull gears from PTO opening without removing deck but you then don't get a good look at what else may be bad in trans/diff. re-post if more questions.
