350 alternator

I recently posted a message in regards to my 350 alternator and thought I was all set. Apparently I'm not. My charging system was working fine but I had to fix something else so I had to remove the alternator(Delco-Remy)now my system is not charging. There are 3 cables, 1 10g on the rear stud and 2 small wires on the side of the Alt. Can someone tell me how to test Alt. to see if it is working, and also verify where the three wires go? Thank's for the help.

I have an International 350 Utility Tractor and want to change it over to an alternator 12 volts.

Everyone I speak to says there is no alternator kit for my tractor. Anyone have a place to order a kit?

The 10 ga wire goes to the BAT stud on the back of the alternator.

To figure out the two auxiliary wires you'll need a voltmeter or a test light. With the ignition switch OFF, take a voltage reading from each wire to a good ground. The wire that shows no voltage goes to the #1 terminal. The other (which should show 12 volts) get hooked to the #2 terminal.

To test the alternator on the tractor, all the wiring must be correctly hooked up. You can then bypass the internal regulator and drive the alternator to full output as follows: Look on the back side of the alternator for a small (3/8" or so dia) hole in the back. About 1/4" inside this hole there should be a small metal tab (the test tab). With the motor running at about 1/2 throttle, carefully stick a small screwdriver into the hole until it touches the metal tab. Then with the tip of the screwdriver still touching the tab, angle the screwdriver so the edge of the blade touches the side of the hole. If the alternator is good you should see a large (20 - 30 amps or more) charge on the ammeter with the test tab grounded. Of if you connect a voltmeter across the battery terminals it should show close to 15 volts if the alternator is good.

Bob M,

On my M, the 12 Volt alternator has only one wire running from the BAT terminal on the alternator. The 2nd wire is a jumper wire that runs from #2 terminal to the BAT terminal on the alternator. I don't think this is exactly correct, but it does work, and it might be simpler than the other wires?? Here's another question, the alternator doesn't work until I rev my tractor up to full throttle. I can start the engine and run it to half throttle and the ammeter doesn't move, then when I get it to full throttle, the ammeter shows 30+ amps, then slowly goes back down as the battery charges. What would make my alternator need to be spun fast to start charging. I've tested it with a voltmeter to make sure my gauge wasn't faulty. Thanks for a reply in advance, but I'm baffled.

Mr J - You have a so called "one wire" regulator installed in your alternator. The need to spin the alternator up to high speed before it begins charging is a characteristic of regulator - it's perfectly normal!
