Going to buy decals for my 1940 Farmall A. There are two styles. One just has a circle with an A in it. The other has "cultivision" written across the A. Which is correct for my 1940 Farmall A??

There are no gods, or even experts, in IH. There's some folks that do research.

And actually, this answer isn't in there yet- new information. I did put it into a recent Red Power Article. Thanks for the plug, though.

From the IH Paint COmmittee Decisions....
They changed in September 1939. The decals before this did not have the Cultivision label, the decals after this (to the end of production ) had the Cultivision label.

Either is correct, it was just a promotional gimmick, some tractors came with it some didn't.

My restored A has the correct decals as far as I know. This style just has an A in a circle. This set should also have the side decals that say "Farmall" with "McCormick Deering" above it and NOT the style with the "Farmall" with the IH symbol next to it. The ones with the IH on them are for post-1945 tractors. I am not 100% sure about the cultivision across the A, it could have been early models or late models.....I'm not sure. The set without the IH on the side decals will have the correct "A" with it.

Now I'm a little confused. (Nothing new, there!) Of course, my books are at the farm but, I thought the "Deering" disappeared from the hood decal in 1949. What's not clear to me now is whether the IH logo was ever included on the "McCormick Deering" hood decals, or if the appearance of the logo was simultaneous with the removal of "Deering."

The answer is yes, IH was included from at least 1947. My dad had a new 1947 "IH McCormick Deering Farmall H".

I believe your right Charles. I know my dad's new 42 W4 had McCormick Deering, my memory is a bit shaky on this but I would almost swear it was on his new 51-52 H. That H by the way had disc brakes. I have a feeling that only disapeared as each model was changed to Super, which of course was different on various models.

Thanks, gents. I'm only just getting started on a 47 BN and that hood decal was one thing that's been weighing heavy. From the Originality Guide, I'd about decided that McC-D with the logo was what I needed, and the thread got me thinking all over again. A lot more serious work to do before I get there, though. I should be worrying about decals when I've got an engine to rebuild, bound brakes, a free spinning clutch, leaking seals at the tranny and finals, and an exhaust lift to locate . . .?! Again, thanks!
