Getting ready to do some plowing with our SMTA. This is my first experience with a torque amplifier tractor. My question is, what range do you normally start in high or low? Or doesn't it matter? It would seem to me you start in low and if tractor can handle it you move to high. I have also noticed when bush hogging the tractor seem to be free wheeling in low range. As I go down hills it seem to be a little exciting. Should I be in high range? Thank for your help!

Really depends on what gear the tractor will handle the plow the best. We normally tried to run with the T/A in direct (high side). That way if you hit a hard spot then had the advantage of going to low side. If your tractor will handle the plow in a gear with T/A in low side then you have the option of shifting up to dead head across the ends. We always plowed around the field so we didn't care about that. BTW, plowing around the field is faster than plowing in lands. Though it seemed slow when you first start out, especially in a large field.

On the freewheeling issue... If you're not running with an overrunning clutch on your PTO, you should be. They're about $70, and will keep the inertia in the brush hog blades from driving the tractor. Kinda nasty to put the clutch in and keep going.

On the Super MTA there is no issue with overrunning clutches on the PTO as the PTO is LIVE and runs separate from the transmission on that tractor.

The freewheeling he is talking about is when the TA is in low range it has no braking power, all of the mechanical TA's are like this. ALWAYS go downhill with TA in HIGH RANGE.

Start uot in low and then shift up, and yes it will free wheel down hill and don't let it.

If you catch yourself "freewheeling" down hill don't panic by throwing the T.A. ahead,it could be disasterous. If you do it quick, push the foot clutch in engage the T.A. and slowly engage the foot clutch, the engine will speed up but the tractor will begin to hold itself back. Watch out on the r.p.m.s so you don't over rev the engine, (blow her up !) My 2 cents
