Tach stopped working?

The tach on my 656 was working just dandy and one day it just stopped. The needle kinda jumps around at the very bottom like it's getting some feedback. I checked what I think is the cable and it's still connected and tight. What's the most common cause of this?

I was hoping to get it working again soon to ensure I am in the proper RPM range for the PTO. Got some tillin' to tend to!

Thanks.

I have had the cable go dry and act this way. Take one end off and pull out inner cable. Coat with a light coat of white grease and reinstall. If it works you've saved some bucks, if not all you are out is a little time. LOL boog

most probably your tach just went, probably not the cable. I have lost two on different tractors that had the same symptoms you describe. I usually just get one from a salvage yard for $40. you can replace a few that way for what CIH wants for one.

Cable coulda busted inside the sheath, or the end of it mighta wallowed out the drive socket at one end (usually at the distributor end, as the tach itself is virtually no load). If it's a busted cable, the toughest part of the job is getting at the back of the tach to unhook it.

Thanks. I'll have to get someone out there to watch the gauge as I spin the end of the cable. Might help determine whether it's broken inside the housing.

Yea, I noticed that it's going to be a b**** getting back in there . . .
