WOW what a blast. I bought a No. 8 trip plow on rubber last Sat. at a consignment sale in Chickasaw OH. Only had to give $110 for it, had semi decent paint, same for tires. Had to replace grease zerks and bolts for coulter wheels, and fabricate 2 U bolts (NOBODY stocks U bolts bigger than 5/16,not even TSC). Hooked it to my 51 H today and began to learn to plow. After some "rookie" mistakes, I figured out where to set the levers, and except for the 2 times I found buried rocks (that spring loaded hitch worked like a charm) I had a heck of a lot of fun!!!!! I told my wife it was a good thing she had already made dinner plans, because I was having too much fun and was getting carried away. We should have a really nice garden this year!!! Maybe this week I can find time to plow the 2 1/2 acres behind the creek ...hope,hope,hope.

Sound like you're having a lot of fun! One quick piece of advice.....while you're out there enjoying yourself and getting that plow adjusted the way you want it, DO NOT succumb to the temptation of reaching behind the tractor to adjust the levers while the tractor and plow are in motion! Doing so will almost certainly guarantee that the plow will find a rock at precisely the time when you have a firm grip on both the steering wheel and the lever, thus leaving you momentarily suspended in the air between the tractor and plow..... This can result in a few inches of extra reach!
Have a good time!

Yeah, I would like to learn to farm but I only have 2.5 acres of heavy wooded property.

I wanted to learn to farm once, but then someone told me I had to learn to WORK first. Just the smell of fresh turned sod lights my fire! I'm just a fake farmer living in a 1790 farm house. I do know that some of the finest people I have ever met came "right off the farm." I've owned over 100 tractors and 350 Gas engines throughout the years, but that's as close to farming as I ever got. I can get milk out of a cow though without a 300,000 dollar milk palor.

Yeah, my property is in pasture and that is sloped as if I plowed it, the first gully washer would strip my top soil away. I get my plow fever done on others property. I plow my, and two other gardens in the neighborhood. And just yesterday, My neighbor talked of flattening his old pond dam down to grade level. Well, I offered to plow and he follow with a blade to reduce the old dam. Sure was cheaper than hiring a dozer, and I know last night when I came in and my wife remarked that my face was tanned, she doesn't realize its exhaust smoke stain from tractor driving all day.

I hooked the H up again today, plowed 1 of my neighbors garden ( his first comment was "man that tractor is old" I told him "yea 51 years old"). He was impressed at how easy the old H handled the plow. After that I went to the back field and started in, the ground was too wet though, I was spinning tires in first gear, with loaded tires and wheel weights. I'll have to wait a few days and try again. Man am I having fun!!!!

You never mentioned if the plow was a 2 or 3 bottom... You should have a smaller 2 bottom plow on that H... You should plow in 2nd or 3rd gear... not low... With all the weight You have on the rear tires Your over-loading the bearings in the rear end like was described in the last issue of Red Power Magazine... Your Old H may only last another 40 years if You continue to use it that way! Seriously, a 2 bottom plow is enough for the old Girl.

The plow is a 14"-2 bottom . I was plowing in 2nd gear with the throttle inbetween 3 and 4(it has a friction disk, so that's a little more than half throttle) and it seemed like it was too fast to me, and it was spinning the tires pretty bad, did'nt want to tear anything up so I dropped down to 1st. Still had tire spin in 1st, so I guess it was too wet, I'm still learning.

You think that having 2 1/2 acres of woods is bad for plowin, buy abou 52 1/2 mre, and not be able to plow it!! We have about an acre of currently plowable land, the rest is very nice grass for just tooling around. We hae 63 acres total. about 55 are wooded, 1 acre is plowable, and the rest is grass for mowing with a lawn tractor-I dont have a belly mower, otherwise I would use the C! What to do, what to do....
