What model tractor?
A's, B's, BN's, & early C's didn't have thermostats or water pumps. They use the thermosyphon system of cooling.
H's, M's & some others had thermostats & water pumps.

What do you have?

Thermostat is 313942R92, 180 degreee, about $15 at CNH dealer, if engine is a D236 glow plug start diesel, should be in engine year around, only reason to remove it is if heating problem and thermostat is suspect of restricting coolant flow.

Not familiar with that particular engine, but I would think it should have one. It's important to operate an engine at the proper temperature. I'd get one as soon as possible. You may want to get an operator's and a service manual too while you are at it.

The less the use the more important the thermostat! Studies have shown that an engine running less than 180 degrees F coolant temp wears much quicker. If the engine is cold the fuel doesn't burn and it washes the oil off of the cylinder walls. I recommend putting a 180 thermostat in right away.
