I have recently bought a 1945 H. I am tring to get it started. it hasn't run in about 4 years. I got it to crank over good and i also have drained the bad gas out of the tank and carb. I am wondering what the mag adjustment does for the tractor. Do you use it to start it or just to adjust the running of it. It is a multifuel model. Thanks for your time. Also is there anything special i should look at the tractor for??

AP, I hadn't ran my Dad's old M for about 10 years and one day about 6 years ago I decided I was going to fire it up..no spark, I took the mag off and took it to a repairman who took some fine sandpaper and rubbed the points until I thought there would be nothing left, he turned it a couple of clicks with a vise grip and said here go bolt it on just like this with #1 at TDC..M started on the second turn of the crank and has been running great ever since. I also like to use a mist bottle with gasoline in it, you can mist it into the carb for a quicker start and keep the tractor running with it until the carb starts sucking and misting fuel into the manifold. I'd give each cylinder 5 or 6 good squirts of oil and spin the engine over several times before installing the plugs back in. This will give you added compression and lube for the initial start up. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

It's unrelated to starting the tractor but I found out it is a good idea to drain the transmission oil. I have had two Farmalls that had a great deal of water in the transmissions.

Good luck with your H. Bob
