I have a Cub with a magneto When you change the rotor what do you line the rotor gears up on. I have several books on Cubs but they all deal with distributors and not magnetos. The drive (lower drive gear, which will go on one only one way) has what appears to be a mark on the gears but I can not find any mark on the rotor that would line up to put it in time. When I bring # 1 on compression and then 'point' the rotor to # 1 in the cap it just backfires. Plugs, cap and wires (solid core) are brand new. I checked the archives but could not find any information on how to 'time the rotor' to the drive gear. Thanks for all and any help, Tom/Idaho

The mark on the rotor isn't easy to see. I believe it is directly opposite the rotor arm.

I have a I&T shop service manual that has all of the info in it you need. It is to long to go into here but if you can receive a fax I would be glad to send it to you. The Manual is "IH-8" if you have axcess to one, pages 47,48 & 49.

Tom - make sure cylinder #1 is brought to Top Dead Center on the compression stroke (both valves closed), the timing mark on the crank pulley (second one) should be in line with the pointer on the block. Now position the rotor such that it is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire. Now try to start it. If it backfires, the spark plug wires may be connected incorrectly. If you still have trouble starting it, check the timing. The impulse coupling of the magneto should click when the engine is rotated to TDC. If you do not hear a click at this position, the timing should be adjusted. Check the archives on this procedure. Let us know how you make out.....Bill V.
