I just inhearited my Grandfathers old International I-544 gas tractor. It is presently not running but all there and did run 18 months ago. I am looking for others with tractors similar to mind to ask a ton of questions that I have.

This is my first tractor so I am learining as I go. I do know form the serial numbers it is a 1968 build I-544 gas. It has power steering (what I pain in the butt moving when not running. Had to actually turn the wheel by hand as steering wheel does not work without power). Appears to have front and rear hydrolics with a 10 speed transmission ( 4 forward/1 reverse with hi/low lever).

Any help would be greatly apprecheated. Thank you.

Steve was nice enough to post some pictures I sent him of two question spots on my tractor. The first is of the left fender. Is this were the batter was supposed to be mounted. All I have is a bungie cord. Was there a battery bracket that I am missing? The next picture is of my console. It has a few holes in it am I was wondering what is missing? The two large guages have the "IH" logo on them. The amp and oil pressure quages look aftermarked. I have two holes that looked like they housed lights on the dash and there seams to be a lower panel that is missing.

If any one has pictures of the thier consoles I would like to see them to compare. Thank's again Steve for posting the pictures for me.

Last night I hooked a battery to my tractor to see if the lights of the dash would work. They did and were green. Anyways while I was hooked up I hit the start button. The Engin turned over. I was very excited about this. I only let it turn a very short time. Is there something I should do to the engin before I try to start it due to it sitting for 18 months. I am thinking I should take out the spark plugs and put some oil in the cyclinders to help loosen them up, but I also do not want to damage my engin if this is not a good thing? What do you guy do after a long storage of your tractors before you start them?

I have run both a row crop and a utility 544, and both had 5 gears.

R-2-4
1-3-5

neither was shuttle both had T/A. I guess it is a wide front. A word of caution, if it is like a 656, in "Low" with the t/a, it will free-wheel down a hill. Just to let you know so you don't find out the hard way.

What is the difference between the row crop and utility?

I have a Farmall 544 which should be fairly similiar if you have any specific questions. Mine has 5 forward and reverse speeds. It has a shuttle instead of the Torque Amplifier. Another version of the 544 transmission was the hydro.

I believe they have a C200 4 cylinder gas engine. It is sleeveless so an overhaul requires removing the block and boring if it is too worn. The tractor is a very handy size, but the engine is very touchy on carb and point adjustments. If you do get it running and it runs erratically check the manifold, they are prone to vacuum leaks.

Did you get the pictures I sent to your E-mail address? Is there a difference between a Farmall 544 and an International 544. My tractor has International in diecast letters on the front. No Farmall decals or emblems.

The row crop or Farmall versions of tractors were higher up off the ground, there is more clearance under the axles and the wheel tread width is adjustable so it fits through the rows of crops like corn or tobacco.

Utilities are low slung, low center of gravity tractors, usually used for loaders and backhoes.

I got your pics and can't help you with your gauges other than it looks like there should be a tin over the control rods below the dash.

Here are the pics for everyone else though.

Steering was designed to have some control even if engine was dead or died during use (like running out of fuel), yes it turns hard but it can be done. Its a 4 cyl version of 656 tractor.

What was a 656? Is it a 6 cylinder version of the 544?

Thank you for your response. I have a few questions

1. Where does the Battery go? I think the left fender but I am missing a bracket to hold it down if that is where it does go.

2. What guages are supposed to be in the console. I have some holes.

3. What is the front grill supposed to look like, I have chicken wire?

4. Is it possible to rebuild the fuel pump or does it need completely replaced like a automoble.

Any help is apprechated.
