What is the difference between MD and BMD engines?

I know that the British WD6 and MD series tractors are direct start and the American built WD6 and MD tractors have that gasoline warm up system on them with the injector pump on one side and the carburator on the other. My question is this why not direct start the American built WD6 and Mds Like the British versions of them. And why not take head off of a BWD6 or BMD deisel engine and install it on an American built MD or WD6 and make it a direct start. Just curious. Thanks.

Maybe they thought direct starting woudn't work so well in cold weather? We had a B275 when I was a kid and if it was cloudy out it woudn't start!

Well, for one thing, the British Diesels are based on the gas block, not the Diesel block. They made conversion kits for the Ms that had been shipped to Mexico- no idea why they never shipped them here.
