Rebuilt the Carb, but now what?

Rebuilt the carb Friday evening, put it back on and now what? I have white smoke, & what seems to be a miss. And it still just shuts down after a few minutes of running. I can restart it a few times before it gives up the ghost.

My dad came over Sunday & looked over the new toy & helped me find somethings.

1: Cleaned the sediment bowl & found clogged ports to it & rust flowing into it.

2: He thought it looked like water in the oil of the air cleaner? Engine oil here or gear oil?

So do I have multiple problems here or just a series that leads to my current state?

Had another post earlier about sticky valves? Sounds very possible? In combination? What is happening?

Thanks

Raymond,

If the oil bath is not leaking, and water has found its way in, then seein's how water is heavier than oil the oil level will be higher than it should. This can allow the carb to suck it in and burn it...it will produce white smoke. I have one that does it. The dying part is probably lack of fuel. Clean EVERYTHING up good and try it before tearing it down.

Good Luck,
SEMO

Ok I'll tell you what I think first the white
smoke is unburned fuel second once the motor
warms up the air/fuel mixture will become very
rich like pulling the choke out you also have
one fouled plug or more. At this point I would replace
the plugs and go back to the carb and rebuild
it and ck float level .

I plan on the inline filter tonight. The White stuff is in the air-filter, seperate from the engine, so I doubt the head gasket did that, but never doubt on it being bad at this point. But there are no bubbles in the radiator. (Symptom of head gasket in most cars)

Trying to do everything possible without pulling the head.

So far....I have

1: Possible Sticky values.

2: Possible blown head gasket

3: Dirty fuel line & tank

4: Possible ignition problem causing miss...

What else is a good idea to check before I take her apart?

And Does anyone know what does go in the oil bath air-filter(type of oil I mean)??

I doubt the head gasket is bad. It seems like every oil bath cleaner I changed for Ernie always has white stuff, water, you name it. He never would change oil in that nor the 90W in the transmission.

It should use the same oil as the crankcase.

Raymond that white mist sounds an awful lot like a blown head gasket. Are you losing coolant?? If you can, get a compression gauge and check your psi on each cylinder. That's my thought if I saw that problem on one of my Hs.

It will be interesting to hear from true A owners. Got my curiosity up.

Don't know about the white smoke... The "shut down after a few minutes" combined with finding rust in the sediment bowl might be the old "clogged carb inlet screen". I wound up sticking a universal inline fuel filter in the fuel line to catch the fine stuff that passed thru the sediment bowl screen, after cleaning the inlet screen a dozen times in a single day. I haven't had to clean it since. At the very least, look at the inlet screen to see if it is dirty.

Good point. That is a very common problem on the Hs.

My Super M's got troubles with the gasket on the bowl. If the gasket isn't set just exactly right then I can't get fuel to flow good into the bowl.
If I leave the fuel open for awhile I can get the tractor to run for a bit, but it won't do any amount of work. I need a new gasket, Reg put the one thats in their now in, he said it came off of some sort of a (gulp) John Deere but he wasn't sure which. I know for sure it don't fit right....
