I thought it would make for interesting discussion for different ones of you to post what five tractors would comprize your ultimate or ideal antique tractor collection, assuming storage room and money are not a factor. I currently live in town and don't have room for full size tractors so I can currently only colllect garden tractors, of which I have four. However, if I could, the following are the tractors which I would consider my own personal perfect collection and my reasons for choosing them.

Tractor 1. Farmall F-30 on rubber tires with Power-Lift
I consider the F-30 as the best general purpose tractor built prior to the letter series tractors.

Tractor 2.
Farmall Super MTA V (High Clearance)
The Series III Super M (SMTA) was the finest and most advanced Sumper M built and I always liked high clearance Farmall tractors. This tractor combines both of those features.

Tractor 3.
International Super WDR9 (Rice Field Special)
These standard type tractors had well preporationed looks with their big fenders, big Rice & Cain rear tires and tall single guide ring front tires. The Super WDR9 is a rare version these days of the Super WD9 and is not often seen in tractor shows.

Tractor 4.
Farmall B-450 Diesel
This tractor is a very rare tractor in the USA. It was only sold in the Memphis District as far as I know, and when we sold them new they were a very good tractor. The represent what the Super M would have evoved to if it had gone to the direct start 4 cylinder diesel engine and the intergral factory three point hitch which the B-450 have.

Tractor 5.
Farmall 806 Diesel with factory steel wheels
The Farmall 706's and 806's were the last Farmall tractors offered whith steel wheels from the factory. I saw a number of new F706's and F806's on steel at the factory awaiting shipment of South America. However I have never seen one on factory steel actually in the field. (I have seen specially made steel rice wheels but they don't count). I believe this F806 on steel would be a very interesting show tractor.

Alternate Tractor.
Farmall 656 Hydrostatic Diesel Hi-Clear
If I could not get one of the chosen five this would be a first alternate. I sold a number of these new and always liked both the way they operated and the way the Hi-Clear looked.

I hope this will generate interest and discussion and many others will submitt their "Perfect Cpollection". Don't just limit it to IHC products. Those are just what I like best.

Ronnie,

Sounds like we have simular tastes. You are the only one that has mentioned the International Super WDR9 and the Farmall Super MTA V (high clear). Of course, I really like them all.

Forgive me, Harold, as most of these tractors are not "Classics", however I am a member of what everyone calls "Generation X", so these tractors are "Classics" to me, so here I go.

1) 806 Farmall. This tractor gave IH a reputation for building rugged tractors. If I had my choice, I would like an early one with the RD injection pump.

2 856 Farmall. As another post said, these were the best "modern" tractor IH ever made. The were so much more refined than the 806.

3 1468 Farmall. Though these tractors were less than popular to most guys that owned them, there is just something special & unique about those twin exhaust pipes.

4) 5488 AWD. Too bad these tractors never really got the recognition they deserve. I would especially like one of the very last ones with the inline Bosch injection pump & CHROME exhaust pipe.

5 7488 2+2. The last new tractor before the Case-IH merger, too bad time ran out on them, too.

Other notables I would like(knew I couldn't limit it to just five) would be:

1) 73-75-7788 4WDs. I think Bermuda Ken Updike knows where all these are. They were the last Steiger/IH joint design in 4 WDs. I think only a couple dozen prototypes were built.

2) H's & M's. No collection is complete without one.

3) IH 4300. IH's first big 4WD that was really many years ahead of its time. Now THAT was a monster.

I realize I would need a much bigger storage shed than most of you guys, but it's still fun to dream.

Harold that sure is a good question. Here is what i think.

1) International 1066 - My favorite tractor of all time; the tractor that i rode on with my father and grandfather until i could drive it myself. One day I WILL have one.

2) Farmall Regular - The first tractor that my great grandfather owned himself.

3) Farmall M - A classic, no collection is complete without it.

4) Farmall H - Once again, a classic.

5) International 1466 - I really like the 1066's big brother. Put dual wheels on it and call me happy.

I'd like a good restored Farmall H and a John Deere B. These tractors will fit a std size two axle trailer and pull with a pickup. For me the ultimate tractor would be a John Deere G. I've been to many a tractor pull and seen these things outpull Farmall M's everytime!!

The hard part about this discussion is the five tractor limit. I have about 20 tractors, mostly all Farmalls but I have some other favorites. My favorite 5 are:
#1. 1924-26 Farmall Regular - Without the development of this revolutionary design (row crop)almost all the tractors you fellows listed would never have been built.
#2. 1917 IH 8-16 - only 125 were built in '17. They were IH's first attempt at a more universal tractor to provide both belt and drawbar power.
#3. Farmall F-30 - Any year, by far the best designed and porportioned F series ever built.
#4. IH Mogul - If you're dreaming why not dream big! I just love to see and hear these early develops chug along at shows. Can you imagine living in a time where that was the latest technology.
#5. Fordson Major - 1950's I was raised on one of these creatures and learned they were one of the most handy, versitile tractors ever made. The diesel engine used in these tractors was 10-15 years ahead of the competition.
Man, is that five already?
My alternate would be an IH 856 with a narrow front end and fast hitch. In my opinion this was IH's version of the JD 4020.

Hat off to Harold for starting this great discussion! I thought about my list a lot.

In no particular order:
1) IHC 140, 1960. I like the old style radiator support maybe a Hi-Clear cause I like the looks of that big spider.
2) AC CA. Grew up with this one. I'd get an old feed grinder cause that's what I remember most about it. And it is pretty. My grandfather was an AC man.
3) Co-Op or Cockshutt E-3?? Our minister had one and it ran great, was odd with its big roman nose. and it was a cool name.
4)Ford 860. My dad took me with him to get this one. I was twenty feet tall that day. The dealer was one good guy, too.
5)Super C with wide front end (saw one and it was beautiful). Or Oliver 1550 (we had one as boy) or JD 4020, or IHC 560, or some kind of MM

Well, I might as well throw in my two cents.
1 Farmall M, any type including Super (have a '49 gas/nf. and use it for the work -love it!)
2 Farmall B, I just like 'em (have a '41)
3 International Super A, Just like these too (still want one)
4 Allis-Chalmers RC, this was my first purchase, '39 model
5 Allis-Chalmers B, I like smaller tractors (have a '40 with adj. WFE, hand start)
6 Ford 8N, alternate for the Int. SA (don't have one either)

Well Harold, I'm going to throw in my selection. I have about 17 IH tractors now but theres still a few I'd like to get hold of. Being Australian you'll notice the "Rowcroppers" don't rate so prominently.
1 WD9 Sheer Grunt for ever and a day. Have one
2 WD40 Unique, fairly rare but still reasonably common Downunder. Have one
3 15-30,22-36 Just so popular here in their time.(long before my time though) Have both
4 660D Diesel version only one to come to Aus.Big power in their day and looked good.Don't have one but would love to see mechanical T.A. in operation.(if it stayed in operation)
5 Farmall H Lot's of fun but no doubt plenty of ability too. Have one. A Titan 10-20 would be great but I'll never get one.

Not many people have listed any of the older tractors, but here is my list..

8-16 Mogul (the single cyl version)

8-16 (the 4 cyl version)

10-20 (have a '23 model)

'39 H (have 3)

856 (has to be the best "modern" tractor IH ever made..

**but if I couldn't have the 8-16 mogul, I would substitute a 10-20 Titan

Harold, do you mean the museum in Jackson?? I was there this past spring, and saw the 2 Titan 10-20s that they had.. They were both sitting outside, and one of the tractors water and gas tanks had rusted through.. They also had a 8-16 (4cyl), that was stuck, and the upper and lower radiator tanks were rusted through.. I kinda felt bad for the tractors and those who donated them to the museum.. I know that they probably don't have enough money to restore the tractors, but I feel that they would best be in the hands of appreciable collectors..

Justin,

I hate to hear they are outside rusting down. I went to the museum when it first opened 15 or so years ago and everything was fresh and well displayed. I havn't been since. One of those two Titans would be the one we had. There is also supposed to be a 1936 International C 15 truck that I restored somewhere there. Did you see it anywhere?

Red,

As mentioned I also like the High Clear Farmalls. We made a number of High Clears, primarly for use as spray tractors, from M's to 560's by using the cotton picker flange type rear axle housings and cotton picker bull gears and 20" cotton picker single front wheel for clearance and a low drum reversable transmission top to reverse the differential. These also made sharp looking tractors.

Red,

I, like you, also consider any true high clearance Farmall tractor highly desirable and collectable. I consider the Farmall H lineage tractors; F HV, F Super HV, F 300 High Clear, F 350 High Clear, F 460 High Clear, F 404 High Clear, F 504 High Clear, and F 656 High Clear, and the Farmall M lineage tractors; F MV, F Super MV, F Super MTA V, F 400 High Clear, F 450 High Clear, and F 560 High Clear, and the newer design F 706 High Clear and F 806 High Clear to meet these criteria.
Glad to see interest developed on this subject.

1. Farmall 400D wide front. My dad had one on his farm, and I just loved the heck out of it. Lots of sentimental attachment.

2. McCormick-Deering 10-20. Love the looks of it.

3. Hybrid Farmall, with a BN left rear axle, a B right rear axle, and a modified A front axle, to make a wide front B, just to see if anyone noticed.

4. Farmall M, gas, narrow front. Everbody should have one.

5. JD 4020, diesel wide front. If I was honest with myself, I would probably rate it higher than 5, but who said I had to be honest with myself? In my opinion, the 4020 was the most significant tractor of its era.

On number 5 Get real. The 806 is king. the only thing wrong the 806 is the shift. The engine is a 10000 to 15000 hour motor, the rear ends are indistructable (if you run it after the TA goes out in direct drive). Now for the 4020 engine is junk(my machinest says "How can John Deere ever build a motor because they haven't built a rod yet.The hydrolics are good but high failer rate.the power shifts are very good. the gear grinder trans. are weak at best
