We had a 706 with the German Diesel wide front. Excellent tractor. It did start a little harder in the winter but simply plugging in the block heater solved that. It did develop some shifting linkage problems later on. When we purchased it it had already been converted to the 56 series shift levers. We had some problems with it getting locked into two gears.

We had a 706 diesel IH engine for several years. The torque was very good in ours and the only IH tractor of three with torque we owned that was good. The only things we didn't like was hard to start in cold weather (glow plugs) and it was a little hard to shift. Other wise good tractor and very dependable. good luck

Watch out for a clunking noise while backing the tractor up in reverse, this noise indicates that the parking brake has chipped a tooth off of the reverse gear that it engages.Around here a good 706 can be had for $5000 or less. Its really a handy sized tractor.

you dident mention gas or diesel, if gas 263 or 291 both good engines, if diesel german 310 is the best. IH ok. wide front adds more to the price tag, also 3 point, dual hyd. dual pto. flat top fenders, check for trans, and rear end noise. the TA is the main weak point on the IHs. tires, general cond. of tractor, if all are respectable $3500 to $5500. a 706 in good shape is one fine tractor, small enough to be handy, big enough to do the job.
