1066, shifting issues again and now not starting

Hi, I had a message a while back about not being able to shift a 1066 into gear. Turns out there are some slots inside the lever area that need to line up to shift. For some reason they get misaligned and it is a royal pain to get them lined up right to shift gears. Usually I have to shut down since I can't get to neutral and work on it a while.

Well after doing this for a bit, the tractor decided not to start then. The guages show electricity but when I push the start button they blank out like there is a short or a power draw. Could this just be low battery or would this be a starter or something like that? Can I jump it with a 12 volt starter if it is battery? I am assuming it is a 24 volt system but I don't have a 24 volt charger nor do I know if they make such a beast.

Does anyone know with this gear thing if there is a way to keep this from happening? Some adjustment or tightening somewhere or part replaced to keep it shifting smooth? Thanks!
-Tim

We've got three 1066s and I'd say that 90% of our starting problems are due to the cable that goes from the positive terminal on the right battery to the negative terminal on the left battery. It doesn't take very much resistance in that cable or corrosion on the terminals to make them act just like yours is.

Like Rusty said the shifter need some work along with some clutch and dump valve adjustment as this is one point that does not see the maintance that it should . As for your starting problems here a 1066 is a 12 volt system , now some one may have at one time added 2 twelve volt batterys when it should have two 6's . When one wants to jump start a 1066 pull the left battery cover and hook the pos. lead to the ft. post of the left battery and put the neg. lead to a good ground on the chassie , myself i use the head of the frame bolt . Also check your clutch safty switch it is under the floor plate on the left side and has linkage that hooks to the clutch pedal linkage.

tractor vet and rusty,

you guys are awesome. Thanks for the advice. I just knew it had 2 batteries. Never checked how many cells they had. This is great news. I will check on the maintenance kit.

Thanks again!
-Tim

Tim, the shifting problem is probably due to worn shifter linkage. There is a rebuild kit available that should cure it. Send me an e-mail. The starting problem sounds like you may need to clean the battery connections.

Rusty are you referring to the hi-low shift kit?

Yes, there is a high/low shift kit and another kit also I believe for the speed transmission. I got your e-mail.

Tim, I called you regarding this. The symptom usually occurs when you are trying to "feather" the tractor in gear by slighlty letting out on the clutch and moving the selector into gear. My brother who has an Oliver "hangs up" my IH all the time because he is used to "feathering" his tractor into gear. I have only had this happen to me twice. To avoid the issue, hold in the clutch and move the selector into gear. If it does not go into gear, move the selector back to the gear you started in, let the clutch out, push the clutch back in and then move the selector into gear. As for the no start, I had the same issue so I replaced BOTH batteries and no more issue.

Tim, sounds good. After I see if I can jump it or not I should be able to tell if it is battery or something more severe. We were told (just bought tractor) that batteries were less than a year old.

Yeah, mine too. In fact, the batteries tested "good," but when I replaced them everything was fine.
