Does anyone out there have the procedure for setting the valaves the first time after having the engine apart? I have a manual but there's nothing in it for setting them. Also, I had my Mag rebuilt and the grounding screw that the switch should hook up to is grounded all the time. Seems like the switch should do the grounding. Just wondering if the Mag wasn't assembled right. The fiber washers are there but there's continuity between the screw and the block. Thanks!

bigr,
Unless I'm mistaken, what you are measuring to ground is the the resistance of the primary winding of the Mag coil, which is very low. The kill switch just shorts the entire winding to keep the ignition from firing.

Someone alse will probably have an answer about your valves.

You bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Then adjust valves 1`,2,3 & 5 and then bring No4 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and then adjust valves 4,6 7 & 8.
Remember No1 piston and No1 valve are near the radiator.

I think your grounding screw is touching the mag
your switch should do the grounding. Hal

Thanks for the valve info. The screw goes through (2) fiber washers back to back. There is continuity between the back side of the screw in the mag case and ground. Just getting ready to try and start the tractor after working on it all winter. Want to cover all bases before that time. Thanks!

There is a link for the adjustment of the valves. What exactly do you mean "the mag is grounded all the time"??

Andy.

When I use the continuity tester between the screw and any ground the light lights up. I'm assuming the screw should not be grounded until you push the switch which kills the tractor, correct?

As the other poster said, the coil's primary winding connects the "kill" post to ground. What you are seeing is NORMAL.

If you have the mag installed pull the coil wire from the cap and hold it near a good ground and have someone crank over the engine to see if there's fire from the coil wire. You may want to a pair od insulated pliers too. Hal
