Hi, The ammeter on my 54 Super H behaves irratically. Sometimes it seems that it"s working great and sometimes it flatlines in the middle. When it does this the engine rpm has no effect. Is this a generator or voltage regulator problem? Can"t find any bad wiring that would cause it.
Thanks for any help you can offer. Erick

Erick - Could be either the gen or regulator.

Next time the ammeter flatlines, run the engine at 1/2 throttle and jumper the regulator base to a good ground (the grounded battery terminal is best). If the ammeter now shows charge, clean up the regulator ground.

If the above does nothing jumper regulator FLD (or F) terminal to ground and while watching the ammeter. If still no charge jumper the regulator GEN and BAT (or G and B) terminals while watching the ammeter.

If neither of the above causes the ammeter to show charge, replace the regulator.

However if still no charge, the generator is the problem. Be looking for a worn out brush, a sticking brush holder, a broken brush pigtail, etc.

Yo Bob, if youre like me the fingers get ahead of the brain at times lol (Been there done that n got the T shirt)

I think you should change the word NEITHER to EITHER i.e. if EITHER makes her charge the VR is bad (or has a bad ground) cuz if NEITHER makes her charge the VR is out of the equation so the genny must be the problem (as you go on to say), assuming all else is okay

EITHER NEITHER SMEITHER LOL

Take care n slow them fingers downnnnn n

I would first suspect the points need to be smoothed by the use of a thinner then normal point file (known as a regulator point file)or better yet a(RIMAC BRAND)FLEXSTONE #2 which is thin and 120 grit)The flexstone is the best.It will smooth and polish.Do not bend or adjust anything.Second make sure the brushes still are not worn down to where the contact is no longer sufficient on the commutator.
