I bet bill clinton was around the corner sneaking a few buds! on the serious side, we could save alot of old groth tress if we used hemp to make paper instead of trees. plus that old H liked the smell of it too.

Back in the mid 60s carpet backing was jute. Most that I remember came from India. Probably a close kin to hemp. Replaced by synthetic poly now. David.

FWIW, hemp grown in KY during WW II was used primarily for medicine and explosives. They only wanted the "seed" not the fibers. My Dad, Uncles, and Grandad all grew it with the Govt"s permission, all coss-checked, about 20+ acres. At one time UK had a book with the rest of the story in it.

The tree huggers keep claiming that we are cutting old growth forest for paper, it is not true. Have you ever heard of pulp wood plantations? They plant pine trees and every so many years they cut the entire field and plant the next crop. All the big paper companies either own their own or contract, so they always know how much supply they have.

Now, after the logs have been cut and sent to the sawmill, the tops and branches may go into pulp wood. Around here it goes into firewood.

Dad told me years ago the Great Grandpa grew it on the farm in central Indiana. They used to to make rope like the other guys said and also to make feed/grain sacks. The old burlap bags. I have a friend in Ky who said hemp was the # cash crop in Ky. he was talking about the "pot" version, but at one time hemp was the cash crop king in KY and way out sold tobbacco. I read at one time there were sack factorys all over the place near the Kentucky river around Frankfort.

Bob, your reply reminded me of a sign at a local salvage yard. It reads Ky's top four cash crops Pot, tobacco, truck parts and votes.

jonnnny, during the war Clark county Ky(Winchester) was the largest hemp growing county(so they claimed) in the US. We still have the remnants of two hemp plants here. I don't have any, but have seen pictures of local farmers mowing hemp with cycle mowers. This is a totaly different breed of hemp than the kind you smoke, so Bill would have been out of luck whether he inhaled or not. Nice picture. Might be in Ky.

That was big during WWII as it was used for rope.

From what I read, the type of hemp that is for agricurtural purposes is real low in the chemical that is in wacky tobacky. It seems pure stupidity that we are not allowed to grow it.
